Hello Everyone!

I hope that someone can help me with this question from a "self-taught novice ".....

My Security checks ALWAYS came up with a bright orange "warning" that I was missing MS04-028 update from Microsoft. Even though I would get a "No updates are needed" clearance from my check at Windows Update.

After putting up with this dire warning from my Security feature of my anti-virus/firewall/e-mail scanner, etc. for two months or so, I went to the KB at Windows, did some research, and since it WAS a security-related update, I downloaded MS04-028 AND it's update so that there were no 'holes' in my system. Here's the problem that has me COMPLETELY baffled;

When I opened the file, a little window came up. It said the following:
"Please type the location where you want to place the
extracted files "....then there was a blank line & a
button that said "BROWSE "; one that said "CANCEL ", and
I can't remember what the other one was!

First I thought that it would belong in the WINDOWS file, but I was afraid to put it there; I thought of putting it in "System 32 "
or the section that had all the numbers listed, and then I got mad because I think it should KNOW WHERE THE HECK IT BELONGS without someone who isn't taught the inner workings of Windows to try and GUESS, and then mess up the Registry or something.

So I'm begging the Pros on this forum to tell me how to know where an extracted file belongs when even IT doesn't know where it's supposed to be!!

Any and all tips will be GRATEFULLY appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help;
Spookie :)

What's your Service Pack level?

Type winver in the Run box (Start > Run).

If you have SP2 (you should), you do not need this update.

This is the GDI+ mess and there have been several updates. The mess consists of Windows and Windows+Office installations being different.

Update to Windows XP SP2 - KB885884 (not mentioned in MS04-028 but the ReadMore link "bundled" with KB885884 links to MS04-028):

If you make a clean installation of Windows XP SP2, then KB885884 is not needed but after installing Office XP SP3, then KB885884 is notified through Windows Update. (The logic is clear as mud ...... :rolleyes: ...... !)

Update to Office XP SP3 - KB832332:

This update was required on a clean installation of Office XP SP3 (on Windows XP SP2) but has subsequently been replaced by KB873352 (MS05-005). The fact that KB832332 has been replaced is not told by an update to MS04-028 but it says so in the FAQ section of MS05-005.

Conclusion:

If you don't have Office installed, you shouldn't need any of them.

If you have Office installed, you need KB885884 (to Windows) and KB873352 (to Office).

Asking for an "extract location ":

I have come across this with updates to Office only and only the full file version of the update, never the client version.

Prior to attempting the install, create the folder C:\TEMP or D:\TEMP if you have more than one partition. Tell the installer to extract to that location. When the installation has completed successfully, delete the contents in the "extract location ".

Further notes on the "extract location ":

The downloaded file is a compressed archive containing several files. The installer needs to extract these files to a location on the hard disk to be able to do the job. The "extract location" is not the final location of the update, the installer puts copies of the files where they should go and the extracted files can be deleted when the installation has been completed successfully.

Updates to Windows and client versions of updates to Office automatically create an "extract location" and also delete the "extract location" automatically when finished.

The reason for fullfile versions of updates to Office behave like that, is to make life easier for an administrator who can deploy the update to several computers over a network.

Thanks for the "muddy" suggestions

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the suggestions....now I'm really confused:confused:

To clarify, I am running XPHome; SP2, and I do have Office installed...I check about 2-3 times a month for updates, and as far as I know....everything's up-to-date. I'll make a quick trip to Windows Update, and make sure I didn't miss anything.

Thanks!
