Does anyone know how i can get VNC to work through a proxy server,

I do not have access to the proxy server as a Admin, just route through it to the Internet....

I have VNC on my home pc, and want to be able to control it remotly from work...

I have tried the Browser and the Main VNC Viewer and no joy, the closeist I get is a Java error in the browser...

    Hope someone can help..

Wazz - don't run VNC so not up on the specifics but it is almost certainly a port issue so unless you can tweak VNC to use a port your firewall will pass (and the firewall isn't smart enough to monitor the exact type of packets trying to pass), I doubt you will have much luck.

You might have better luck with the "remote assistance" thing that M$ is touting with XP. It works but like all the freebees M$ throws in, it isn't a very sophisticated applet.

Or possibly TermServ - if you can run it. I use this one quite a lot for remote control and within it's limitations it works quite well.

ok how about then, a new twist....

how can i ping a address from behind the proxy and get a reply back, I have tried adding the proxy as a gateway and instead of "Destination unreachable ", i now get "request timed out" which im sure means the ping has found its way out somewhere,,,,

    Thanks in Advance

You could always increase the ping ttl ( "time to live" which is really a mis-named hop counter) and see if you get to it. The default is usually 128 so if the site is 129 hops from you, ping will quit at 128 and say it has timed out.

Or use tracert (traceroute) and see if you make any progress towards the destination. If you decide to do this, I highly recommend the Sam Spade tools as being lots more fun to use than the command line utilities. You can get an on-line (and limited) version called "quick tools" at http://www.samspade.org/ or use a link from there to download a more extensive set for use from your PC. Free.

What proxy are you using? MS Proxy, for example, even with the Winsock Proxy client, doesn't route ICMP (ping) packets from clients so you won't get a reply. The default VNC (TCP) ports would not normally be open for outbound access anyway.
