Rhino--Can you cut or copy and paste anything anywhere?
If not, you may have lost your Clipboard. In WinXP, the executable is named clipbrd.exe. I do not know if the name is the same in Win98. Do a Find. If you find it, click on it. Can you copy and paste again?
If you do not find it, try to restore it. One way would be Start|Run|type sfc|OK. Now follow the procedure for Extract as described in this article.
    http://users.erols.com/dj-paulen/ss/
You will need your Win98 installation CD. If you do not have one, when you are asked for the source of the file, choose C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.
As the article says put the extracted file where SFC recommends. I suspect it will be C:\Windows.
If this is not successful and the problem only started in the last five days, you may be able to use the scanreg /restore command from a MS-DOS prompt. Post back if you need details. But do so quickly since you only have five days to restore the system to a date five days ago.
And an alternative to all of the above is to install a third party clipboard, such as Clipboard Magic (free)

    moving and copying

Thank you both for your help but I fear my problem is more complex!! I can copy and paste within documents and have a clipboard my difficulty is in moving or copying files. I cannot move files to other folders either in windows or using windows explorer , I want to move some files and use click and drag to put files onto floppy.
    Thank you again

rhino--I misunderstood what you want to do.
When you right click the file you want to copy to a floppy, do you have the option Send To? If so, when you click that do you have the option 3 ½ Floppy (A)? If so click on 3½ Floppy (A). That should start copying the file to the floppy assuming you have a floppy disk in the drive.
If you want to actually move (cut) the file from where it is, just delete it once successfully copied to the floppy. That step assumes you know you do not need the file to run the PC.
If you do not have "3½ Floppy (A)" in the SendTo menu, click File|New|Shortcut|Browse in the SendTo window.
P.S. Are you also saying that you cannot move files, etc., around from folder to folder by right clicking, dragging, dropping and choosing Move Here?

Well to be honest, I don't remember if DCOM has anything to do with copying and pasting text etc. I do know that it's something you already have and if it happens to be broke somehow, you'll lose the ability to drag and drop. I'd install it (actually you're reinstalling it) and see if that fixes the problem.

You could try the reg fix on this web page. Don't know if it'll get you going or not but it's worth a try. It's the second one in the list.

If you do try it, be sure to read the readme file first. The zip file has two reg files in it. One is the fix, the other is something else. You may want to run it or you may not. As I said, read the readme.

    Copy and paste problems

D not know whether this has anything to do with your problem. But worth checking.

Go to your Internet Explorer -Tools - Internet options: Choose security tab. hit the custom level button and scroll down to the miscellaneous section. make sure drag and drop or copy and paste files is enabled.

You don't have IE? Did you use something like 98lite to remove it? I could be wrong but it seems to me that I remember that when drag and drop quit working, reinstalling IE was also one of the fixes. It may be that installing IE would reinstall DCOM too but I don't remember for sure. Anybody else remember this?
