PC set for automatic updates downloads, but PC set for manual install. Where (folder) are these downloaded updates stored on the PC waiting for manual installation? How are these downloaded updates identified?

The purpose is to check/evuate each download prior to installing. Using custom install is not good enough.

View Which Hot Fix Patches Have Been Installed
    Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Hotfix. Periodically Microsoft releases Hot Fix's to patch bugs in Windows and other products, this key contains information about which Hot fix's have been installed

ewewhat--Run a Search for the number of the Update. (You can learn that by going to the Windows Update site and seeing what updates are offered.) Often Update files end in enu.exe so you could alternatively run a search for *enu.exe.
Why not set Windows Update to just notify you and neither download nor install? Then when notified you can go to the Windows Update site and make your decision there.

If it is detailed information that you require concerning each update then your best bet is to connect to Microsoft Update, select Administrator Options and then the Windows Update Catalogue. Select your Operating System followed by type of update. In the list of updates presented if there is a Read More link hit that for more detail about the Update. That, AFAIK, is the best you will achieve.
