How do I set a new default Windows Explorer window width? I am willing to use regedit. The standard Ctrl-close combination is not sticking. the Tools-Folder Options-View-Apply to All Folders method simply does not. Help? Anyone?

bkreamer--Is this happening just with Windows Explorer or with IE also?
Are you sizing the window the way you want it by dragging the edges, then closing it using the X at the top right? Windows should remember the size the next time you open a Windows Explorer window. If not, try holding down Alt, when you click the X. Or Control or Shift, in each case when you click the X.
Another possibility is to size the window as you want it, then click Tools|Folder Options|View tab| "Apply to all Folders ".
If none of this helps, what size window are you getting upon reopening-- roughly what percentage of the screen? What size do you want?
There is a potential fix using TweakUIhttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
After installation, open TweakUI|Explorer|Customizations|set the number at 5000. However, if you are using WinXP SP2, it should already be set at 5000.
If I remember correctly the fix is primarily for SP1, but it cannot hurt to have a look.

Open any explorer window, click tools>folder options>view and make sure the line that says remember each folder's view settings is checked.
