When i turn on my computer, i get a black screen with some white text saying that windows did not start properly, i have some options which are:
    1. Safe Mode
    2. Safe Mode with Networking
    3. Safe Mode with Command Prompt
    4. Last known config that worked
    5. Start windows normally

The problem i'm having is that no matter which option i choose the screen goes to the windows boot screen with the flag logo, and progress bar, and then after about 5 secs the computer resets itself and brings up the black screen again.

Basically the computer just loops and loops!

Please could someone help me, as i have no idea what is the problem or how to resolve it!

    THANKS

their are only two solutions i can think off doing this!

remove the hard drive and put it into another computer in order to get the files off if possible.

i was hoping that i could insert the windows cd and somehow rectify the problem with the booting to access the desktop and get my files off and then reinstall windows xp.

The first option is ALWAYS a better option even if many do not agree with me. Backup your data and reformat, reinstall from scratch.

u could try a repair install using the windows cd to boot from. the second 'R' option here as the first 'repair' mode will only get u a command console.

the 2nd R option should get u to a reinstall-on-top option that will basically reinstall windows over the current install.

    worth a shot.

and u may wanna check w/ u'r PC vendor for any updates etc to HW. maybe the HD maker's diags program as well.

just tried the windows cd, but nothing happens!

so it seems like the hardrive is the last option, yet my computer only has one! Which has windows installed on it, and all my files, so what does that mean??? I have never done anything like this before, do i just stick it in another computer and move stuff over or is it gonna conflict?

surely their are ways to get data other than this!

Hmm not quite getting what you mean?
Okay so like the computer is turned on and the intel logo comes up and then the black screen appears straight away! If i choose Start Windows Normally it brings up the normal boot screen for about 2-3 secs before resetting itself and starting all over, all the other options just bring up an empty screen before resetting as well!

I inserted the windows xp cd but nothing happens!
Is their someway in which to get it to run or assist in the booting???

in bios, there are 'boot order' options. IF hard disk is 'first', it'll never boot to any cd ;) ... read u'r system docs or look at the boot screen for 'hit x for setup/bios' type messages and then ... hit X ;) ... where x is the key sequence to get to setup ;)

once u'r there, look for 'boot order' and verify that CD is listed and ... first. if it's not, make it so.

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP see Method 2: Reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD.

See also How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

No, it will not format the drive, but the security of the system cannot be guaranteed 100%. For your peace of mind and to preserve your data hitch up the drive as a slave in another computer and copy over that data which is irreplaceable and burn it to CD. Then reinstall the drive in your computer and try a Repair. If that goes pear shaped you have the option of a clean install with format.

A little late now, but you should always backup your data to an independent destination, i.e. to another physical drive or to optical media on a regular basis - daily or weekly at the very least :)

    Okay this is very confusing!

I ran the setup and first of all chose the Recovery Console, it basically just brought up the command prompt, it mentions on that website to NOT use this, but to rerun windows, which i have, problem is i'm faced with a problem of being unable to reinstall over, it says it needs to format the partition.

As none of the options listed in your first post will work and as Setup from the XP CD cannot identify an installation of XP to repair I think your only hope is to hitch the drive up in another computer, recover your data and then reinstall the drive in your computer and make a clean install....

.... unless someone else has a better idea :)
