run a disk check minimally. if the disk is corrupt, this can happen.

is the machine clean of bad guys like viri etc? run scans w/ current .dat files etc.

There are a number of possibilities to solve your problem ....

Start the computer in Safe Mode and run a virus scan - post back if it will not run and see this ....

You cannot start programs when your computer is infected with the SirCam virus

You receive an error message when you try to start a program that has an .exe file name extension

Your Config.nt & Autoexec.nt files may be corrupted - If you have acces to another XP system which runs OK then copy these two files from C:\Windows\System32 directory to yours. Look at this MS KB article too ....

    and finally ....

If you see error messages as shown in this article ....

Cannot run EXE files - Programs don't open

As you list your computer experience as beginner please back up your registry before you do anything :)

    What did you do?

    OK try this ....

Start > Run > type in services.msc > OK. Scroll down to Help and Support and make sure the service is set to Automatic and is Started.

Most likely it will be as your problem would seem to lie elsewhere and affects all .exe files.

    Run System File Checker ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow > note the space after sfc > OK. Have your XP CD handy. SFC will run and exit without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any have been replaced look in Event Viewer > System.

To start Event Viewer right click on My Computer icon > Manage > Event Viewer > System. You should see at least 2 entries for System File Checker (screenshot) and if any files were replaced the info will be between these two entries.
