Recently, I looked at my windows XP error events log and found that, starting in the middle of November, the log showed that I have a "bad block" on my one and only hard drive. This drive was installed by Best Buy in an open box unit that I purchased because the original hard drive was bad, according to them.

My question: Should I be concerned and would this be considered a manufacturer's defect? I ran a chkdisk.

    Additional info

This is exactly what it says:

"The device, \Device\Harddisk5\D, has a bad block "

This message is logged, every day since November 15th on the log.

Hi paperhanger, take a backup ASAP.

With your data out of the way we can start looking at the problem. If Windows is detecting a bad block - there is a bad block somewhere out there on the disk.

A usual chkdsk is not going to find it or do anything about it you have to use the /r switch for that. A better way would be download the utility from the drive manufacturers site and test your drive with it.

If the manufacturers util also shows a bad block (bad sector in hardware parlance), you may be able to get a replacement but you have to confirm it from the manufacturer/supplier. Good luck.

    Bad HD Block

Can you advise me on how I determine what brand of HD I have, without taking the case apart?

    Download Everest from here ....

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

Run and under Storage > Windows Storage click on the hard drive (will look something like this HDS722525VLSA80 - Hitachi Deskstar or this WDC WD1200JB-00EVA0 - Western Digital - other makes will have identifying initial letters, so it should be easy enogh to identify which is the hard drive in the upper pane) and the make and spec will be shown in the lower of the two panes.
