steeven - Welcome to the Board :)
Please clarify - have you rebooted the computer? If so does it start normally or go directly into safe mode?

What do you see on the screen when you boot - a menu in white text on a black ground giving several startup options or ??

    PeteC,

i restarted the computer and it stayed in safe mode
The screen displaying all of the icons and the start button are blurry and over sized in the 'safe mode setting'
Also, i've lost some connections to sites i normally visit everyday
I've tried using the Help button, but it doesn't have any troubleshooting solutions for my specific need of returning or re-installing the 'normal mode setting' to my pc's screen display?
There is a warning sign that states 'your computer is running in safe mode' because of the loss of 'normal mode' setting, but no instructions as to how to get my computer screen back to 'normal mode' ??

Steeven - I see that you list your computer experience as Beginner, so we'll take this one step at a time :)

Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig > OK

In the dialogue box which opens is Normal Startup selected?

Close msconfig > OK. Post back on this.

In Windows Explorer go Tools > Folder Options > View and check 'Show hidden files and folders'.

Look for this file c:\windows\wnbootng.sts - does it exist? Post back on this.

Did you install any new hardware or software immediately prior to this problem occurring?

BTW - I have called up the cavalry on this to see if we can resolve the problem for you swiftly :)

Here's a link from MS that refers to your problem. Before doing this please post back with the answers to Pete's question. I'll be gone for while today and just posted this to get things started. Depending on your answers, it may be the next step to fixing your problem.

Windows 98 or Windows 95 Defaults to Safe Mode Even After Successful Start

There's two suggestions to fix this in the article. The first is the easiest, the second requires a Win98 bootdisk. If you don't have one, I don't think you want to make one on the computer with the problem because of possible corrupt files so it would be best if you downloaded one. You can get one here. If you're using Win98FE, download the one that says Windows 98 OEM. If you're using Win98SE, Download the one that says Windows 98 SE.

To make the disk, put a floppy disk in the a: drive and then double click on the file you downloaded.

If it happens that you need to do what's mentioned in the article and you don't understand it, post back and we'll do our best to help you out.
