Netscape 7.2: I cannot move any messages into the 'Junk' folder. When I try to drag a message into the 'Junk' folder, I get the following error message:

    Alert
The messages could not be moved or copied to folder 'Junk' because writing to folder failed. To gain disk space, from the File menu, first choose Empty Trash, and then choose Compact Folders, and then try again.
    OK

Emptying the trash and compacting folders did not help.

Some background: I had Netscape 7.0; it was installed in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\. I did not uninstall 7.0, but I installed Netscape 7.2 into a new folder, C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7_2\. Junk mail controls are enabled. I have tried closing Netscape and deleting Inbox.msf and Junk.msf, but no improvement. I have uninstalled 7.2 and reinstalled it, but no improvement. Thanks!

    Welcome to the Forum, ric13579!

    ric13579,

In Tools | Junk Mail Controls, open the Junk Mail Log, and clear all data. Then disable: Enable the Junk Mail Log. I have found that other users have used this workaround as a solution to the error you are having.

If this doesn't help, let us know...

Thanks Ramona. But my junk mail log was empty; I hit the 'Clear Log' button anyway. The 'Enable the Junk Mail Log' button was already unchecked. I still can't move any messages to the Junk Folder. Do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks!

    ric13579,

Try deleting the Junk, and Junk.msf files, then start Netscape and see if this helps.

What about the other Junk Controls settings? Anyway, you should not have to drag and drop anything. If the thing work you should be ablr to click on the icon between the subject and sender (in Netscape and Mozilla), or after the sender in Thunderbird, and depending on your choice, it should go in, either, the Junk folder or Trash. I have given up sending anything to the Junk folder, because most of the stuff does not deserve to be anywhere else but the Trash folder.
Make sure that you compact folder, periodically.

    Ramona,
I deleted the Junk.msf file, but got no improvement. However, I do not have a Junk file (without an extension) to delete. That may be a clue to solving this problem. I even did a search for Junk to see if it was in some other folder. It was not found.

I do have a 'Junk' folder in my ...slt\Mail\mailhost... folder. It is empty.

    Thanks! Any other ideas?

    Westside,
Thanks for your input. Here are the answers to your questions:

The other Junk Controls are as follows:

    Enable Junk Mail Controls: checked
Do not mark messages as junk if the sender is in my address book: checked
    Personal Address Book selected
Move incoming messages determined to be junk mail to: unchecked
When I manually mark messages as Junk: unchecked

I am just starting the training of the Junk Mail, so I didn't want any messages moved automatically yet. After a period of training, I planned to enable the automatic moving of Junk mail to the Junk folder. But my Junk folder will not accept any messages, manually moved or automatically moved.

Regarding dragging and dropping, I get the same error message if I click the File icon and select the 'Junk' folder from the list.

I have already emptied trash and compacted folders.

    Thanks, any other ideas?

I guess I didn't make myself clear, that is the file I meant for you to delete.

In the Junk Mail Controls, are your settings like this Screen Shot?

My junk mail control settings are listed in my post to WESTSIDE above.
I just tried changing them to match your screenshot, clicked OK, then I closed Netscape, and deleted Junk.msf and restarted Netscape. No improvement, I still can't move any message to the 'Junk' mail folder.

Thanks, I appreciate your persistence with my problem. Any other ideas?

    Ric,

We were posting at the same time, and just saw your reply to Westside. You said:
I would definitely have the messages moved automatically to the Junk Mail Folder, as this is part of the training. Something else that is very important, is to mark messages as NOT JUNK, as well as messages that ARE Junk. You can do this by right clicking the message and select: Mark.

Try this for a while, rather than moving the files manually, and see what happens.

    Ramona,
Thanks. I get most of my spam overnight, so I'll see what happened in the morning. I have set my Junk mail controls per your screenshot, and I have marked 90 legitimate messages as not junk. In the last two days, I have marked probably 30 spam messages as junk.

I let you know what I see in the morning. Thanks!

Thanks Ric, and remember, it takes at least 2 - 3 weeks to train your Junk Mail.

    Hi Ramona,
I received three messages overnight, and all three were correctly identified as junk by Netscape. But they were not moved to the Junk folder, even though the Junk Mail Controls tell Netscape to move incoming junk to the Junk folder.

And if I try to manually move one of the junk messages to the Junk folder, I get the error message in my original post.

Something seems to be preventing writing to the Junk folder.

    Any more ideas? Thanks!

    Ric,

I would start fresh with the Junk Mail Controls and filtering. Since you are just starting to train, it actually shouldn't be too much trouble.

In Tools | Junk Mail Controls
    Disable all settings

    Next:
    Close Netscape 7.2
    Navigate to your *.slt folder
    Delete these files:
    Junk
    Junk.msf
    junklog.html
    training.dat

Open Netscape and set up the Junk Mail Controls the same as the Screen Shot. Start again on marking both Junk and Not Junk. Be patient, as this will take time to start working. Don't move anything manually...

Take a look at this Tutorial for Junk Mail Controls:
    http://www.mozilla.org/start/1.5/extra/using-junk-control.html

If after a couple of weeks if you are still having problems, then I would suggest creating a new Profile.

    Keep us posted.

    Problem solved!!

In my ...slt\Mail\mailhost... folder, I noticed that the Junk file (with no extension) was not a file, but it was a folder. I noticed that this did not follow the pattern of the others. For example, there are files named Inbox and Inbox.msf, Drafts and Drafts.msf, etc. However, I had a file named Junk.msf, and a folder named Junk (but no file named Junk).

So I closed Netscape and moved the Junk folder to another location. I created an empty text file, and saved it as Junk.txt, closed it, and renamed it as Junk (no extension). I ignored the warning about changing the file extension. I moved this file to my ...slt\Mail\mailhost... folder.

I restarted Netscape, and now I can move files to the Junk folder. Yippee!

Ramona, thanks for your persistence with my problem.

    Ric,

Good going, and your persistence paid off, as you figured it!
