I don't have a Win 98 machine to hand right now but did you copy and paste in Windows Explorer? If you haven't restarted the computer, I believe you can click edit and choose "undo copy ".

If not, there should be a "Desktop" in Windows Explorer which should list the files as in any other folder.

rhondas--It has been a while since I used Win98, but I would think you could hold down the Control key, highlight all the files you want to send to the floppy, then right click on any one of the highlighted files, choose Send To|
choose Floppy|OK. If you have only a few other files on the Desktop, you could do the above in reverse. Highlight the ones you do not want to send to the floppy, then click Edit|Invert Selection. All the files you want to send to the floppy will now be highlighted and you can send them, per the above instructions, to the floppy.

    rhondas,

Right click on My Computer and select Explore. On the left side of the screen, click on Desktop. You will see a list of items on your desktop. Just drag and drop the files to the new location of your choice.

I still don't have a Win98 machine to hand but:

What is the reason for doing a scanreg?

    What happens if you don't?

That's strange. Did you empty the trash can after deleting the files? Maybe this is related to the other problems that you are having. If you list the problems and error messages, maybe somebody can offer some help on those and then we can get back to the desktop.

If you left click and drag the files somewhere it merely copies them, if you right click on them and drag them somewhere if gives you the option to move them--which is what you want. If you have a short on your desk for the A drive[floppy] you can highlight all the files by holding down the ctrl key after highlighting the first one and highlight the rest but be careful not to drag the mouse while highlighting as it will make more copies on the desktop-when you have all highlighted right click on one while still holding down on the ctrl key and drag the cursor to the floppy shortcut and choose move here.

Is Win98 different from WinXP in this respect?

On WinXP, if you left-click, drag-n-drop within the same partition, the file gets moved. If you left-click, drag-n-drop from one partition to another, the file gets copied.

I just tested on my 98 system, and you are correct Christer. Within the same partition, files are moved.

My mistake I guess as I have a C: and a D: and the A: drive and I was moving from one drive to another or to my external drive or USB flash.

A better or at least more reliable way to move them is to right click on them, drag them to where you want, release the right mouse button. You'll be presented a menu that will allow you to choose whether you want copy or move the files. No need to remember which circumstance a left click copies and which one it moves. ;)

    Zander,
you're right but if one doesn't know that the behaviour of "left-click, drag-n-drop" is different depending on the destination, it can get very confusing. The probability of someone having more than one partition is quite low but better ...... ...... than ...... ...... !
