On the computer I'm using now, the last time I reinstalled XP, I got adds pop up right after I installed the OS. Before I could even enable the firewall, add software or anything. If I remember right, I installed, got the adds. I wiped the drive clean again and installed it again. I was able to not get the adds the second time.
It's now time again to wipe my HD (Write data to it several times) and do a clean install of XP. My disc doesn't have SP2. Is there a way to get SP2 installed before I am open to the internet? How can I make sure when reinstalling XP to get a clean install without any spyware or adds coming in before I can block them?
    Thank you,
    Chris.

There are two ways of getting hold of SP2 on CD ....

You can either order a CD from here ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

or download it to hard drive and burn to CD from here ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

You will need ADSL or cable as it is a 266 Mb download :)

You should also download Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta and burn that to CD and install, along with your Antivirus before connecting to the Internet on your new installation of XP. Then go to Windows update and install the patches/updates.

Unplug the network cable before installing. The ads are coming from Messenger Service. Install sp2 and make your configs before connecting the network cable. Then, once connected, activate windows and roll onward.

On the download site it says, "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER:." I'm only updating one computer. How can I download SP2 for just one computer? Chris.

That's the file you want to download. My guess is it's just their way of trying to get as many to use windows update as possible. It's a lot smaller download that way but if you do that you can't burn it to a cd.

Anyway, download it regardless of what it says, double click on the file and it'll install SP2 for you.
