Any more info on the "count-down" window?

I'm guessing you're infected with Sasser or similar worm.

While loading windows, It never can get to the welcome screen. It stops at the point where it asks me to select normal start up or safe mode.
If I pick safe mode the system does a scroll of files and stops and goes back into a reboot. I can't get any further.

Thanks...mrz79

OK, now I see what you mean...

I would start by doing a repair install. Boot from the WinXP CD, and proceed with installing WinXP.

Do not choose the option to "repair an XP installation using Recovery Console" when prompted, choose the option to "To set up Windows XP now press ENTER "

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option "To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R ".

ARIE...
When I put in the xp cd it now says to press any key to boot....then back into that safe mode, safe mode network window and the 30 sec. count down begins again.

The last time it started to reboot I was able to hit the Delete key and get into the "AMIBIOUS SIMPLE SETUP UTILITY" window which is where I'am now.

What's next??

Mitch

You have to set the BIOS of your computer to boot from the CD-ROM. On bootup, you'll get a message to "press any key to boot from CD-ROM "...

mITCH, here are the instructions - step by step on how to change your boot sequence - but please beware that since I do not have the model info about your computer or BIOS, these are very general but a good point to start poking around anyhow.

a) Switch on your computer
b) Press Del key
c) You should be placed in CMOS or BIOS setup (both are one and the same thing) - I would be using xxxx to denote either CMOS or BIOS.
d) Look around for Advance xxxx SETUP or Boot Configuration
d) If you have Advance xxxx SETUP - goto this option by arrow keys and press enter - Look for Boot Sequence - Change sequence to CDROM->HDD->FDD. If you have first boot device kind of option, change it to CDROM.
or if you have Boot Configuration Change sequence to CDROM->HDD->FDD
e) Look for an option Save and Exit
f) Goto this option by using arrow keys and press Enter

The system would now reboot and if everything is correct, if you place your WinXP cd in cdrom, you would get a prompt 'Press any key to boot from CD-ROM'. Press any key when you see this prompt and you would be able to boot from CD.

Hope it helps.

It wanted my win 98 cd !!! By any chance do you have an upgrade version of WinXP, because only an upgrade version asks for proof of previous version?

Mitch if you format the hard disk you will loose ALL your data. So you have to first take a backup of your data (if you require it). The best way to do it is to take out the hard disk, put it in other computer as slave, boot the computer and then copy the data.

rsinfo...In setup, why is it telling me that it cann't find a previous ver. of windows installed on my pc?? That it has to verify that I qualify to use this upgrade product. Now insert win 98 which I did.

After I do that is when it says--I no more room or partition is full or damaged, and now wants me to reformatt???

What do say to this??

Thanks...Mitch

Mitch you have an upgrade install cd of WinXP. An upgrade always asks for proof of ownership of previous version.

Since I personally don't have much experience with upgrades, I cannot offer you a concrete answer. But my guess is that you have converted the partitions to NTFS which Win98 can't see and it wants to copy some files on the hard disk, but there is no space ! Just try this - copy your Win98 cd into a folder and when WinXP setup asks you for previous product, just enter its path.

Not sure if it would work, but worth a chance. Let us know.

An "upgrade" version of Windows is the complete version of Windows. You get a reduced price when purchased because you own a previous version of Windows, therefore you have to 'show' proof that you own a previous version (verifying with the Win98 cd). Other than that it is the same as the full 'retail' version.

Mitch... is your hard disk full?? How much 'free' space do you have on that partition? Windows needs plenty of space to extract files as well as install. If there is a question about the health of your hard drive, go to the manufacturer's website and look for their hard drive utilities. These are normally free and will tell you if the hard drive is failing.
