Example.. my provider's webbased mail system... when i go to delete or print... nothing happens and i see the javascript command on the lower left of the screen.

this happens whether i am using IE or Firefox........

add said domains to u'r IE's trusted would probably solve for ie.

ff - i think - allow java globally unless u have a java add-on. if u do have a java add-on, 'allow' the domain u wish basically

or u could lower zone/java permissions. and i'd check u'r startup stuff like firewall, av or spyware scanners as many will limit abilities on web in this manner.

bill320--skeet6961's suggestion to put the site into Trusted Sites should solve the problem. But if you do not trust the site that much you should be able to accomplish the same thing by clicking IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level|and checking Enable for Active Scripting under Scripting near the bottom of the list. Then Apply|OK|OK.
All this assumes that your problem is with javascript and not Java.

    No solutioin yet

I'm still scratching my head on this one.

I was given a number of procedures by HP ( my portable is an HP Pavillion) and I have tried them all including reinstalling Sun java and checking and unchecking a host of boxes......

I was told by one person not to confuse java with javascript and my problem seems to be javascript related.

My java applets work like a charm on games sites its just two sites that i seem to be having the problem in.

I added one of them as a test to trusted sites and still no change.

I think its time for a reformat unless someone can comeup with a cyberp miracle. Time to start doing a final backup of data. :(

Javascript is NOT java, they are 2 completely separate and different things. Java application can have some javascript code embedded inside them. They are similar in name only.

If using a web browser, and see the javascript error icon in the status bar at bottom of browser window, then that means the either:
    1. the javascript code that the browser attempts to execute is incorrectly written code or
    2. the browser is incabable of executing the javascript code because it does not support the function in the code. (browser bug)

No single browser support 100% of all available javascript code, but most browsers support enough of it to be practical and pretty darn good.

Internet Explorer does not disply an error icon when it encounters an error in java, just javascript. If ther browser cannot display the java applet or encounters an error in the java applet code or the code used to embed the applet in a web page, then the browser displays nothing at all, just white space on the page or sometimes a gray box.

If see javascript error from the browser then you have a javascript issue and it has nothing to do with java settings in the browser.

give us the uri of the website where you get the errors.

I tried the windows repair routine

I tried the windows repair option from the xp home installation disk.... 45 minutes later im back on with the same problem.

The two websites in question is my webmail site from my provider so you have to be inside it to have the problem and you can only go there if you have an account so giving it wont help any.

The second site is a log in page for a website i am upgrading content wise for a client. the problem there is that once i log in with my user name and password.... the screen goes blank and the and the site admin tells me its a java problem with my computer. It works on my daughters computer and on my computer at my client's office... its just my portable that has the problem.

    I'm getting frustrated...........

Reformatting will solve it... but then there are all those apps to reload and up[date.... yuckkkkkkkkk :(

curious if u've got a 3rd party firewall or anything in startup that 'does' script protection. if so, turn it off and test.

if u'r not sure, a safe mode boot w/ networking SHOULD make the test ok. but u can get a startup manager like mike lin's (put in google) or use MSCONFIG to disable all startup items temporarily and test.

if the problem goes away, u can use above to add back progs 1 x 1 w/ reboot & test until u find the critter(s) that are the cause. then either config em proper, fix them via patch/update, kill them or replace w/ like kind that does not cause the problem

    1. who is your isp, they probably have a faq and tshoot page for webmail? Secondly, I've never come across any webmail that uses java, only javascript. It's unusual for an isp to require java of their customers since java no longer is included in windows computers.

    2. same applies to site logins. Unusual to use java for such, but it is possible. Why not use ftp to updade the site or use ssh if need secure file transfers? What's the url of the login page? I will examin the source & see if it actually is using java or just javascript.

meanwhile, it is possible that you have a corrupted cache. Delete all temp internet files & cookies, delete the contents of c/docs&settings/username.local settings/temp.

    I reformatted

I finally gave in and reinstalled Windows XP from scratch.

It's been a year anyways so it was long overdue.

Backing up was a pain but also something that was overdue.

Now the puter is running smoothly..... and i no longer have those javascript problems.

A big thank you to all who made suggestions.

    Bill :)
