Lately, often when I click on a folder or program, my laptop will often open up a Windows window that tells me it will be installing or configuring Norton Antivirus. I click Cancel, and it does this to me two more times before it brings up the program I want. I know I have had this problem before, but I forget what I did. I lurked through the File Types in Folder Options, but couldn't see anything out of whack. Any suggestions?

    Hi Paul,

The only thing I can think of is that the NAV install setup .exe is still hanging around in one of the temp folders.

Look in Docs/settings > user name > Local Settings (hidden folder) > Temp.

    Regards - Charles

    Hey Paul,

Just thought of the obvious, if you haven't already, when this happens again, bring up TM, what's the process?

    Regards - charles

    Hello there Charles,
I am using a Lenovo Tablet X41 that has so many startup programs its not even funny. I did ctrl-alt-del and there must have been 40 or so. Anyways, I went into safe mode and deleted well over 500 (no joke, it gave me the number) files in the Temp directory, but a reboot still has the computer trying to install Norton av. You know, the last time this happened was on my desktop. I called Dell's tech support and the only things they told me to do (predicatably enough) were to reinstall MS Word (the program that Windows kept on wanting to install) and XP itself. As I recall, the reinstallation did stop that from happening again, but it sure does seem like over kill.

PeteC, that was indeed what the problem was. The utility identified installation files from NAV and after wiping them out, things are fine. THe warnings made me stop for a while---they almost sounded like they would uninstall the program itself. But things are fine.

I wonder why just going into the temp directory didn't do the job. Perhaps the installation files were somewhere else? Like I said, I emptied the temp folder but this utility found installation files for 20 programs or so. I only deleted NAV in the spirit of "if its not broken, don't fix it. "

Oh well. Thanks a lot--to everyone who posted. That was incredibly annoying--having to click several times just to open up a folder or program.

No problem, Charles. You know, I've seen in a few forums the last few months, an option (at least for the original poster) to mark a thread as Solved. That might help others when they search and find 147 threads with "files" or "installation" in them, to hone in on the ones that actually presented a solution that works. Just a thought--maybe I should post this in another forum. But since this is solved, I'd love to communicate that to others who were in such dire straits as I was in. :D

Good to know that the program worked and solved the problem!

We've discussed this 'problem solved' matter before - it's not really practical, especially as it would rely on the poster coming back and marking the thread 'solved'. You have no idea how many posters disappear of the face of the earth when a potential solution is posted and we hear - nothing. No idea if it worked or not - and we - as volunteers, really don't have the time to read every thread in full and mark them up.

I would agree with you that a lot of posters don't come back, leaving the threads dangling. I guess I have a different take on that. I would simply say that the few who would come back and mark it solved, would do a great service to future posters, b/c they could narrow down their search considerably (conceivably one could narrow a search for only "solved" threads), and spedn their time reading threads that contain a solution.
