I am a long time User of Netscape 7.02 and Windows 98-SE

After reading Ramona's advice to another User recently I decided to try Firefox and Thunderbird Mail.

In my exploring of the new programs I decided to uncheck the Thunderbird Status Bar found under View | Toolbars | Statur Bar ---

After unchecking the Status Bar, it disappeard properly but, then I decided I wanted it back so I went and rechecked the Status Bar.

It checked properly. But, lo and behold "No Status Bar appeared ". I thought perhaps you needed to unload and reload Thunderbird but, that wasn't the case.

I had also previously checked the box at Tools | Options | Advanced | General | which states "Show Expanded Columns in folder pane" and which allows you to have the "Unread" and "Total" show in the Folders Window on the left side. So, I unchecked that but, again no Status Bar.

I have by now checked and unchecked most all options but, still no Status Bar on the bottom of the mail page which tells me I am probably over looking the obvious.

So, I reckon it is time to holler HELP!!!

    Ray,

    With Thunderbird closed:
Navigate to your Profiles folder for Thunderbird and rename the chrome folder to Xchrome.
Now open Thunderbird and see if your Status Bar becomes available.

    TB 1.5 final xp home.
All that stuff is stored in active profile:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\<profilename>\localstore.rdf

Just as a thought, check file properties an make sure that "localstore.rdf" is NOT set to read only. If it is remove the Read Only attribute.

If no luck - then with TB closed, rename localstore.rdf to localstore.rdf.0121( I use the date as a placemarker) This will load a pristine localstore.rdf.

Open TB - you will have to reconfigure your customized display preferences.

If still no luck, please let us know.

Response to Ramona and the chrome folder

I followed Ramona's suggestion and changed the folder name to xchrome which was located at.... D:\PROFILES\RAY-2006\bi02czhp.slt\chrome But, nothing happened. I had expected the next time Thunderbird was loaded it would create a new chrome folder but it did not.

I next loaded Mosella Suite with it's mail program and it did create a new chrome folder at.... D:\PROFILES\RAY-2006\bi02czhp.slt\chrome

For the benefit of others I need to explain this:........

Dancing to the beat of your own drum is wonderful until you miss the drum which is probably part of the problem here.

I've been using Netscape 7.02 for a long time but, recently read where Ramona strongly urged other Users to update and go with either Mozilla Suite or Firefox and Thunderbird.

I took her advice myself and download all 3 programs and started using them to see which combination was going to replace my Netscape which frankly, I am saddened to loose but, it is now in the hands of AOL and I see no future in trying to hang on to a lost cause any longer. (Just one mans opinion)

Athough I had read and Ramona cautioned against it. I set both the Mozilla Suite and Thunderbird to use the same profile as Netscape was using which incidentley is located on a 2nd internal hard drive D: on my computer.

I have grown accustom to installing the profiles on Drive D: because my computer has the C: Drive mounted on a tray and I can use a C: hard drive with Windows-98 on it or insert a different hard drive with Windows XP on it.

By having the Profiles installed on Drive D: it matters not which H/D is installed either the XP or 98 because both of the C: H/D have Netscape 7.02 installed and the options set to use the same profile on Drive D:

This allows me to use the same profile bookmarks, address book, mail folders etc. regardless of the operating system I am using at the time.

I have not as yet installed Mozilla or Fx or TB on the XP H/D.

Thus far I am learning the programs using Windows 98-SE

AND, up to this point I have thus far allowed Firefox to use it's own default profile on drive C: located at C:\WINDOWS\Applications Data\mozilla\firefox\profiles\yf84w2ys.default\ and all I did there was copy the current bookmarks.html file from the Netscape Profile folder into the "yf8w2ys.default" folder of Firefox.

I have been using all 3 programs about 10 days and I've had no problems using the same profile on Drive D: except for not being able to get the status bar to show again in Thunderbird after once unchecking it and then rechecking it.

I must confess that when I followed Ramona's suggestion that I may have renamed the wrong chrome folder because I later found another Chrome Folder at C:\2-NET\T-BIRD\chrome which is where I have installed the Thunderbird program files.

I do not know what this chrome folder is for, perhaps it is Thunderbirds chrome default folder and Thunderbird does not use the chrome folder under the normal profile path or .slt folder.

I guess a lot of what I am writing doesn't need to be said but, I just spent a frustrating afternoon getting the status bar back and have it working properly in Thunderbird.

If this saves anyone else the same frustration then I am glad to help.

It was frustrating because the Thunderbird remove program, as does most other programs, only removed about half the stuff. It even left the desktop icon installed.

It took me about 3 or 4 removals and reinstalls to locate all the folders and files being left behind. I knew it was leaving some files because it kept installing with the address book and previous mail accounts already in place.

I had erased all the left behind files at C:\2-NET\T-BIRD and C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\

After the 3 or 4 removals I happened to look down a little further in the tree and dog gone there was a folder at the very bottom named Thunderbird and even one named Talkback that went to the Thunderbird program.

Now, I must say that it don't take a rocket scientist to figure out if the Firefox folder is listed under the Mozilla folder then shouldn't Thunderbird also be below the Mozilla Folder. AND I would also think if Talkback belongs to Thunderbird then it should be a folder below Thunderbird.

After erasing the Thunderbird and Talkback folders located at C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\ I reinstalled Thunderbird in the path of C:\2-NET\T-BIRD and again set up the mail account and once more told it to use the Local Directory of D:\PROFILES\RAY-2006\bi02czhp.slt\Mail\RAY-2006 which is the same folder location which Netscape Mail and Mozilla Suite Mail are using.

I am happy to report that checking and unchecking of the Status Bar now works properly ever time and either dissappears or reappears immediately depending on checked or unchecked.

The only thing different from the previous setup and the current one is that I named the Mail Account RAY-TB when previously I had named it RAY-2006 which is the same name given to the folder where the mail is kept.

I am going to assume however, the mail account name is all intenal and has nothing to do with the profile or status bar. I make this assumption because a search of both Hard Drives failed to produce any reference to RAY-TB.

I remain at a loss as to what kept the Status Bar from reappearing and I have no idea what I did to fix it except the removal and reinstall must have gotten rid of something.

Before ending this. I will explain why the C:\2-NET\T-BIRD is my install path.

First off, Like I indicated in the beginning, I dance to the beat of my own drum and don't much like anyone else trying to run my computer. We tolerate people doing things to our computers that if done similar to our cars they would be subject to being shot.

The 2-NET folder contains folders to all the other programs having to do with the internet and that is 3 different version of Netscape, 2 FTP programs, and now Firefox, Thunderbird and the Mozilla Suite.

I still let Bill Gates and company put IE where ever they want it.

The 2-NET is so named because it lines up right under 1-MAINT which is where all the Adware, Spybot and other maintenance type programs are installed. I also have 3-IMAGES - 4-MISC - and 5-GAMES for the same reason of lining them up in the tree. Remember the song "I did it my way "

Before I get off my band wagon I hope powers to be will consider giving us the options of deleting the Local and Template Folders -- I personally have never used the local folder and have never understood it's purpose. Same as with Templates. However, I can see where some folks might like having the templates.

AND I don't much like having the Attachments show on the bottom of the mail in Thunderbird. I like the Mozilla and Netscape method much better. Could this not be made an options.

I also hold the opinion there should be options on the Uninstall Program and one of them should be labled "Absolute Complete Removal "

A Special Thanks for Ramona and all the others of you who post on this forum.

I have not posted in a spell but, I have been watching and learning from each of you who post things in this forum.

Thanks to you all and PS: I shall Return if so does the Status Bar problem

    Thanks Capt.

I did go look at the localstore.rdf file to see what I could learn from your suggestion but, your message arrived after I had already done the uninstall and reinstalls and had the Status Bar working again as outlined in my reply to Ramona.

However, there was a delay in my reply and writing all I wrote because the wife and I went out to do some shopping and to eat.

I'll keep in mind what you said just in case the problem returns

    Thanks a Lot,
