    Hi folks,

I uninstalled a program recently (atleast that I think was the precipitating factor). Since then I've been having a weird problem. My keyboard stops working the moment it logs in to windows. It works in BIOS, it allows me to press F8 and boot into safe mood (where it stops working again). I've tried all sorts of things. I get an error code 39 (keyboard driver corrupt - reinstall; which i've done a lot of times). I finally decided to reinstall win xp and guess what - I can't use the keyboard to enter the serial no.! I got a new (USB) keyboard and that too didn't work. Interestingly the shortcut calculator key on the keyboard did work!

I think it's a registry problem. The error log on my comp showed that there had been some prob with a dll file. I tried to download a copy of the said dll file and tried to copy it in windows>system32 and ofcourse winxp won't allow me to copy that either (this file is in use by another program....).

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

in all the years i've been on various forums, i have never seen anything like this. i can only suggest that you decide which keyboard you want to use, either the ps2 or the USB, then plug it in. then do another complete re-format/re-install of windows. i find it very hard to believe that after your first re-install, the drivers were corrupt. this could mean just a bad re-install of windows, which can happen. but, it does seem odd that the USB keyboard wouldn't work, as windows would have had built a driver base for that, which in turn, you could have then installed the updated drivers for the USB board.

also, be sure to get back into the BIOS again, make sure that the keyboard ps2 is enabled, and any USB ports are enabled as well.

a new, fresh, complete re-format/re-install, should have cured your problem, as all new drivers would have been installed.

i was even searching for a keyboard "lock" that maybe somehow you activated when you uninstalled that program you first mentioned which could have caused all of this.

good luck, post back with your final results.

Oops. Sorry for the confusion. I couldn't reinstall windows because I couldn't use the keyboard to enter the serial code. So I haven't done a reformat and re-install. I could do it with a bootable cd but I want to avoid a reformat because that would mean loss of data. One more thing that might cause confusion - I still can navigate in windows through my mouse (that is how I found out about the error 39).

What do you mean by this 'keyboard lock'?

    geesquire,

You probably need to turn on your 'NumLock' (by the number keys) in order to enter your code during installation. HTH

my guess is that he doesn't really care if anyone needs to know his solution. otherwise, as a courtesy to all of us here, he should have posted that fix as a "mater of fact" in his earlier posting..............
