Netscape downloaded some "upgrade" by itself

I was out of the house and when I came back it said netscape was downloading some "upgrade "... It said it was going to Netscape 8.0 rather than 8.0 somethin or other (the 8.0 had a word behind it and I don't remember it.)

Well, my only choice was to click "finish" so I clicked that button and now netscape won't open at all. It's really making me mad! I had SOOOO many things saved in the bookmarks that I can't lose.

Any idea as to what went wrong or what I can do? Thanks for any thoughts. Oooh, and I don't know if this is relevant or not but I'm running on Windows 2000.

Which version did you have? In any event, NS7.2 will check if updates are available, but can't find anything about installing it. NS8.x has a place in its Tools|Options|Avanced|software updates, where you have the option of having it download and install, without any further urging, which is suicidal.
Not knowing what you had before it is hard to tell.

    Hee, hee. Suicidal!

    I love it.

    The AOL way!

"AOL is now fixing your computer. Please wait.

AOL is now rebooting your computer. "

"Windows Protection Error. Please reinstall Windows. "

    Heh, heh. :p

Don't wanna be rude, but Suicidal got me yukking it up.

    Please return to whatever.

Yeah, I was laughing because I remember trying AOL a few times.

They have buttons like "Fix My Computer. "

What the? You press it, then your firewall notifies you that AOL is doing really deep stuff and you better say okay because who knows what it already did?

Then it finishes, and you still have no clue what it did.

    People like this? No thanks!

I've even taken to installing every one of the zillion (um, exagerated) Windows 98SE Windows Updates individually myself (since I found explanations on MDGx's website). This, instead of easy programs like the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack and stuff or even Windows Update itself. I do go there afterwards for any new stuff, but this way I know what just happend to my computer.

With those service packs, you say okay and watch blindly while your computer is changed at the speed of light. Nice, if you're sure you want everything the pack creators think is good for you. Personnally, I'd rather make memory settings, icon choices, etc myself. Takes days instead of minutes though.

Very funny about Kayleigh saying he was out of the house while Netscape (AOL) did all this stuff.

But then, some folks would really prefer automatic things as long as they do the correct changes. What's bad is when something goes wrong and you have no idea what caused it. That's not funny at all. That's a bunch of annoying troubleshooting ahead.

I had AOL for almost five years, and I would not let it do anything. It would give a report, to which I responded: Oh, interesting. But, it would not do anything without my permission. And, I would not leave it on if I walked out. Who knows what it may do.
But, I would like to know a bit more about this. We still don't know what it was updating from.

Westside is on fire in this thread! :)

I think this sounds like an innocent update pushed by AOL, but it seems that it somehow created a new profile.

I don't have my Mozilla stuff installed right now so I can't play with it, but I think this fellow needs help restoring his old profile, or at least his personal files from it.

It would have been nice if he just had backed up his bookmarks (that's all I need), then he could just import them within the program.

Perhaps this update is set to use a fresh profile on purpose, so maybe helping him to locate and restore just his bookmarks is the safest thing to do.

    Eck,
I was commenting on your part on the "Fix my Computer" in AOL. This does not have anything to do with what is happening with Netscape. That's why I had said "We still don't know what it was updating from..
If it was at Netscape7.2, one would have NS8.x, and the profile would be entirely different.
I have no idea how this would work, but the NS7.2 profile should have remained where it was. I don't think that the program would have been uninstalled, but there may be one more folder in Program Files|Netscape. If there is no Netscape Browser folder, I give up. We just need more information.
But, since I have Netscape7.2, and don't have NS8.x, I may be able to provoke the same situation. However, my NS7.2 profile is not located in the default location, so, I may not have the same situation.

Yes, it's perplexing what happened to Kayleigh's Netscape during the update. It looks like it won't open now, so all I can think of is a full uninstall. I would delete the profile in this case as something got corrupted here.

What's up Kayleigh? Any progress on your end? Do you know how to locate and backup your bookmark file before deleting your profile? Or even how to go about a clean reintall of Netscape?

I hope we get something because I can't even think of a way that this would happen without human intervention. There should be at least two Netscape shortcuts, and, if there is only one, which does not open anything,, right clicking on the shortcut, and selecting properties should tell us what it is supposed to belong to. I don't have anything in the default location, so I am not even sure of an earlier Netscape location, but it should be in something like Program Files|Netscape|Netscape, if a NS6 or 7, and Program Files|Netscape|Netscape Browser.
There should be at least two Netscape entries in the Control Panel|Add/Remove
I am not sure if uninstalling would be the way to go, at this point. I, actually, with the present lack of information, I will stop here.

I know. What has it been, a week? And we're all just chatting amongst ourselves here wondering what could happened.

As much as I enjoy a good chat, Kayleigh? No more info?

Oh well. It would have been nice to figure out what happened.

    Eck,
    nice talking to you.

P.S: I got this reply at another newsgroup.

Netscape 7.2 is the end of the road, no updates available. NS 7.2 and NS 8 are not related and there is no interaction between the two applicatons.
