All of a sudden my CD drive will not recognize a blank CD. It recognizes audio or program cds but when a blank cd is in the drive and I try to burn something a pop up comes up telling me to put a disk in the drive. My OS is windows 2K.

Are the blanks the same type you've used before?
What is the make and model number of the drive?

I tried 2 different brands of CD. As for the drive I'll have to wait until I get home this afternoon to check provided I can find that info on my computer.

Steve all I can find on the computer about the drive is the following:
    HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE8526B
It has standard CD rom for manafacture.

Ran both apsi programs and both said apsi not properly installed. This drive came with computer and has run fine for two years. I just resently had trouble install a HP printer and it was found my 2k was missing the INF file. I now have the xp pro update but wanted to back up my program and data files before installing. Do you think this problem is also a crupt 2K software problem?

This could have occurred by corrupted drivers or a corruption of your burner software. Just follow the steps at the ForceASPI link.

Tried your suggestion but still the same. When unzippied and run the force aspi I get files not found. It may be I just don't know how to run the programs from winzip. I'm a real novice when it comes to this. I'm getting frustrated as I feel I just don't know what I'm doing. I'm temped to call geeks help but after spending close to 5 hours with a HP tech and not getting my printer software to load I hesitate.

You will find the .bat files in the folder that you unzipped to. It is fairly straight forward.

The instructions say to run them using a Command Prompt. If you are not sure on this it should mean to go to Start -> Run and browse to each of those unzipped .bat files in turn. (Not being a Win 2000 user I could not be completely certain about that though :))

whiskeyman, I got the ASPI programs to run and the check program shows them but my computer still don't reconize a blank disk when I check from my computer or if I try to use back up. It will reconize one if I try to burn a cd in media player.

I don't believe blank disks would be recognized in My Computer or Windows backup. With the backup you need to save the files to the hard drive (usually in a folder) then use your burning program to burn them to a disk.

Turns out there was a program that came with my computer call Nero Express that will burn data files. Worked great! Took a blank CD to work and tried my computer and your right it won't reconize a blank CD. Thanks for your help. :)
