I'm using a lot of old softs that would never run with Windows xp Home's SP 2. Therefore, I don't want to activate Windows auto update. But Norton Protection Center, even when auto update alerts are turned off, absoltely "wants" to check whether Windows auto update is turned on or not. The fact NPC gives me a blinking red cross on its tray icon is not a problem to me. My problem is that NPC absolutely wants to check whether the Windows auto update is turned on or not, that this checking is useless to me, that it slows down my system and that because of this, I'm forced to wait until this useless checking is finished before to be able to do anything with my system.

My question : would anyone know how I could definitely disable this checking that is useless and intrusive for me?

I say "intrusive" because Microsoft leaves me the choice of activating or not the auto-update and Symantec seems to want to impose it to me...

Thank you and sorry for my English (I'm belgian).

vincentjacque--If you are not running WinXP SP2, what version of Windows are you running?
If an earlier version of WinXP, you can (and should) visit the Windows Update site to get all the various updates to IE, etc. Many are vital to improving the security of your PC. You can always refuse the offered download and installation of SP2. (Visiting the Windows Update site is different than using Auto Update. The same updates are offered but you are completely in charge of what is downloaded and installed. Even AutoUpdates can be set to just notify you of the availability of Updates but not download or install them.)
As far as the concern that old software will not run on Windows XP or SP2, are you aware that XP offers a Compatibility Mode for running old software? If you right click the .exe file for old software and then Properties, you may see a Compatibility tab. Use it.
And if you install SP2, and find it causes too much trouble, it is easy to uninstall SP2 from Control Panel|Add/Remove.
As to the Norton Protection Center, itself, it apparently has annoyed many people. It can be disabled

OK Welshjim, thanks, I disabled this option as shown. I'd prefer NPC to be enabled 4 everything but Windows auto update, but this is obviously impossible...

    Thanx.

    (Y did I buy NSW 2006?)
