Norton Antivirus 2003 came installed on my computer. After the 90-day trial period ended, I suscribed yearly, knowing I needed to pay to update the virus definitions. My current subscription expires 12-2-05. Since 11-2-05, I have been unable to update the definitions. After several emails with them, it appears that they no longer support NAV 2003. So, it seems to me that I paid for 12 months of definitions but only got 11 months worth. That's the part that ticks me off. It also makes me nervous not having updated definitions, especially with reading about the latest viruses in the newspaper every other day. Since Norton ticked me off, I am thinking of switching antivirus programs. I installed the free version of AVG on my in-laws machine, and they say it works fine. I welcome any feedback from this forum on switching. I also wonder if I should anticipate any problems getting the Norton program off my machine. I have heard that this is sometimes difficult. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Norton isn't the easiest thing in the world to uninstall. Click Here for instructions provided by Symantec.

If you decide you don't want to hassle with uninstalling it, just disable it completely and don't reinstall it next time you do a reformat/reinstall.

I've used AVG free for several years and I've put it on all the family computers. It has protected even the least careful user.

I agree with Miz - AVG Free is fine - use it on my laptop now after dumping Norton when the renewal came due recently. Also installed it on several friends computers over the years - no problems to date - and, more importantly - no virus problems either.

I did this the other day and my machine went nuts (couldn't even tie on). I had to get with my ISP and we removed the browser which I don't think was necessary but the big thing was running their adware/spyware program. After cleaning everything up and re-installing the browser, things worked fine. I would suggest running the spyware/adware program before removing Nortons.

I still use norton 2003. When they say "they don't support it anymore ", that means that customer support does not handle questions about it. You can still get updates for the program and av definitions using Live Update. If your norton2003 won't update then you don't have a problem w/ norton, you have a Windows problem, or most likely an issue with spyware thst attacks norton.

AVG here as well... and that after using Norton for years. In my opinion it appears to have become bloatware and it digs its tentacles deeply into your registry. Best thing would be to simply disable it and continue with AVG.

Just as an update, I've been using the free AVG virus protection for a month now and it seems to work just fine. Thanks to all for their input.
