I changed the motherboard and its working fine, however during the installation of software the pc restarts by it self. Can it be the psu?

    PC details here ....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=51090

It is not unusual for the PC to restart when loading software, but generally a warning notice or request is given. Any particular software?

Does the PC reboot of it's own accord when it is being used in circumstances other than loading software?

You might check that all the fans are running. In your other thread you mentioned that you changed the motherboard. If this involved removing the heat sink from the CPU and reinstalling it in the other board did you clean off and replace the thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink? I wonder if the CPU is shutting down because of overtemperature.

    Hi Peter,
Well i don't get any warning and i dont belive it's due software issue. This happens randomly even if im not installing software.I belive it's the cpu.Like you mentioned i had installed different motherboard so i had to remove the cpu from the asrock mb.However i did clean the thermal paste with a card before installing it on the new motherboard. Can be because i didn't replace thermal paste?because i don't have any .All Fans are running fine.

I looked in BIOS the CPU temp is 39 which is normal

    Advise thanks:)

simond, you defiitely need to use thermal paste. Since it is "sort of" working (I would expect the temp to be much higher when Windows is running), you probably don't need a high quality compound. I grabbed a tube of CoolerMaster thermal paste recently and although being inexpensive, it is doing a good job on the heatsinks I have installed with it.

Read through the instructions at the ArcticSilver website for ArcticSilver5. The instructions will tell you about the techniques to use and why it is important to have a good (thin) layer of paste applied. It also tells you about how and why to clean the old paste or pad off. www.arcticsilver.com

Once you do the application correctly, you will find it to be quick and easy in the future. It is something you need to know if your are building your own PCs.

    Thanks for the info guys,
i forget to mention that the pc restarted twice when installing the video card drivers.what i noticted even go into safe mode due to missing HAL.DLL from system folder so i reformatted the drive again and installed windows xp.This time i didn't install the drivers for the video card.Guess what? so far it hasn't turned off the machine. Is it likely the video card can restart the machine? Im using BIOSTART motherboard with Biostar geforce 6200 Video Card.Should i update the drivers?im scared it will go crazy again lol.I Got pcie express video card i could i try.I had to restart the pc now and it froze up and did not go through post process.I had to shutdown the pc and startup again,But still not restarting.I've also disabled auto restart from windows Profile.Anything else you can suggest.

Well after three hours of turning the machine off/on the problem has come back up now, however this time with a blue screen of death. This time i had disabled auto restart from windows profile. Here is a screen of the error message

    Here is the error message

I followed the instructions but what microsoft stated i did not have enabled.

Just to let you know,I've modified the ini file to "/noexecute=alwaysoff /fastdetect and seems to have fixed the problem.

    Many thanks
