I do not really know what else to label this.

Under the Windows folder on my HD I find these subfolders.

    The oldest is $NS131UninstallKB93803v2$ 8/04/2004

    The newest is $NtUninstallKB912919$ 1/05/2006

Each has a Sub-folder of Spuninst.

Now. I am THINKING ( thinking only ) that these are the uninstall files for various Windows updates. SVC Pks. Knowledge Base etc.

I just checked again and I see a folder $hf_mig$ with sub folders dated from 10/3/2004 up to the last one which is also 1/05/1006

    Hi BillyBob!

You are correct about the stuff that you have noticed.

The "$NS131UninstallKBxxxxxx$" folders contain uninstall information and if you need the space, they can be deleted (after verifying that the update causes no problems).

The "$hf_mig$" folder contains information on file versions. If two updates are dealing with the same file, Windows uses this folder to check for the latest version. If an update attempts to install an earlier version than already exists on the system, it will be prevented. This folder makes it possible to install updates in whichever order (I think, maybe someone can confirm) and it should not be deleted.

That's right. They're for uninstalling windows updates. If you choose to delete them they'll remain in add>remove programs but once you've deleted them, you can remove them from there by selecting them (in add>remove) and clicking the uninstall button. Windows will see they're not there anymore and ask if you want to remove them from the add>remove programs list.

I got a call that an appointment had to be canceled so I went to work.

    Deleted the Files.
    Used add/remove.
Ran RegSeeker to clean up the messed up Registry.
    Restarted Windows
Defraged the C: drive ( what a mess it was )
    Restarted again
Checka Windows updates. There were a couple.
Now all seems ( so far ) to OK. Even a bit smoother. But Defrag could have played a part there.

And last but certainly not least.

    THANK YOU for the help.

    BillyBob

    PS.
BTW. A new RP has also been made.

Can a folder be made in C:\Windows that all those uninstall folders can be put in? Would it work if those files are needed down the road to access from their new location or put them back in their original location to access? It's such a long list!

Alicia J--Perhaps I misunderstand. If you have these files, they should already be in C:\Windows. See the link in my post above.
If you want to transfer them to some external media to save space on your PC, you should be able to and then restore them to C:\Windows if you ever need them.

I guess I could burn them to CD. What I was wondering, and didn't explain very well, can I take all those folders in C:\Windows\ NTservicepackuninstall.*
and put all of them in one folder in C:\Windows just so I don't have to scroll thru a whole list when finding something else in C:\Windows\

You can move them all into one folder if you want. If in the future you decide to uninstall one you'll have to move it back to it's original location first.

I wouldn't put them on a CD if you're thinking you might have to use them sometime. All of the files you write to the CD will be given the read only attribute and this may or may not cause problems in when you use them. I can't really say for sure. If you do burn them to a CD and you decide to use one of them, I'd first copy them back to the original location and then remove the read only attribute from them to avoid potential problems.

Thanks for the info guys. Maybe I'll just leave well enough alone for now.
Scrolling down the list isn't that much work.:)

Before I got external drives, I burned these files out to CD and as a test, had no trouble loading back out to the Windows folder and accessing them.

Don't see the point of moving them to another folder on the partition if your object is to save HD space or to shrink the size of Windows which is a help if you do any scanning or imaging of the OS.

If your objective is not seeing that long list in Add/Remove, then un check "show updates ".

Anyone wanting to test this, use one of the early cumulative IE uninstall files, you'd never have to use it anyway.

    Regards - Charles

charlesvar--I think what Alicia J wanted to do (and still can) is to put all those uninstall files into a single folder, so she would not have to do so much scrolling when she opened the C:\Windows folder. Saving disk space was not the issue.

    Hi Jim,

so she would not have to do so much scrolling when she opened the C:\Windows folder.
Ok, mis read the intent, thought the issue was the MS Update list in Add/Remove.

However I'm puzzled why anyone would want to do that on a regular basis.

    Regards - Charles

They're service pack and KB Update uninstall folders. You don't need them unless you plan on removing a previous service pack or update.

I move them onto another disk on my computer so they are not included in my daily images.

Just remember where they are in the rare event you need to uninstall an update.
