Things are finally coming together:) I was able to recover one of my programs
from my external Maxtor after upgrading Dantz. More about that in another forum:mad: After I formated HD and reinstalled Win XP and NS 7.0 I was assigned another .slt. Now that I can recover from the external HD which has my old profiles with an old .slt, can I either rename the old to the new or the new to the old??? and then recover all my files: bookmarks, mail boxes, address
book etc.. Can the .msi files be deleted??

Part of my problem was a bad HD- 2 or more sectors- got a new one -a bad printer, got a new one. Norton got me PO'd so I dumped it and got PC-cillin which I really like. Little by little I'm getting back where I was 5 monthe ago
only better. My 1st post was "NS7.0 won't load" on 8/16/05 and the last was by Westside on 11/26/05. Thanks to Westside and Ramona(glad your feeling better), I was down and out with the flue for 3 weeks also.

It's been a learning experience. THANK YOU for all your help.

    Joe,

Glad you have recovered from the flu! Even with a flu vaccine, those bugs seem to get us, don't they?

For Netscape 7.1, this is what I would suggest:

If the file path on the NEW drive is exactly the same as the backup profile, e.g.:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles
then copy the backup Profiles folder to the Mozilla Folder, in the above location.

If you have already installed Netscape and there is already a Profiles folder, then move it out of the Mozilla folder, to a temporary location. Once everything is working, you can delete it.

    Next:
Open the Profile Manager, and create a profile using the exact same name as the one you just copied to the Mozilla folder. When you open Netscape, that Profile should be recognized.

Let us know if you have further questions.

I would also add that your Netscape 7.1 is seriously obsolete, has security vulnerabilities, and you might want to think about upgrading your browser to Firefox, Mozilla, or SeaMonkey when Version 1.0 is officially released.

    .slt

HI! I'm still using NS 7.0 but I do not think it makes any difference.

A new NS 7.0 has been installed for a couple weeks and has the same USERNAME (JOE)
as the old ones in my backups. If I move it (Profiles Folder) out of the Mozilla
folder to a temporary location, will I be able to move some of the files (esp. in the mail folder) back to the new Profiles Folder (the one that I recovered from my backup) as there are some there that I want to keep in the new one. ?? Bear in mind, the xxxxxx.slt in by backups(2) is different than the one in my present profiles. I have tried to describe the "NEW" and the "OLD" in a way you will know which one I am talking about:confused: Maybe I should call one "A "
    and one "B ".

    Can .msi files be deleted??

.msi files are Microsoft installation files, and they have nothing to do with Netscape. As far as I remember they were in a Temp folder, and, anything there can be deleted.
As for your profiles, don't worry about accessing the "NEW" folder. I would place it on the Desktop, where it will stare you everyday, until you get sick of it. And, then follow Ramona's directions.
If you have only the .slt backed up, instead of the profile, you will have to have to place it in a folder. In other words if you had an "Old" profile called "JOE ", or whatever, you should copy and paste it in the path given you by Ramona, to replace the one you moved out. The "Old" .slt should be in a folder, which should also be called "JOE ", then call it "JOE" when you go to the profile manager. The profile is not, really, created, but rather the link. Work with Netscape closed. And, after you get things under control, try to do some updating. I lost count, but if you really have 7.0, there have been 15 updates which would take you to Mozilla1.7.12.
Don't worry about the name of the .slt folder. When you create a new profile it will have the correct .slt, if you copy/pasted the one which was backed up.

Yes, you can move mail files back to the new Profile. If there are messages in the "Inbox ", then rename that file to Inbox2, then copy Inbox2 to the Mail Account folder (pop.isp.net). Do the same for any other file which contains messages that you wish to keep. Ensure that Netscape is closed before doing any editing.

When you refer to *.msi files, by chance are you asking about the *.msf files in the mail account folder? If so, those *.msf files should NOT be copied. Only the files WITHOUT the *.msf extension.

    xxxxxx.slt

Good info in the last replies, Thanks:)
Before I go there I want to fix a slight problem. BTW, they are MSF not msi.

When I open Win Explorer, go to xxxxxxxxxx.slt, mail, my ISP, I get all the usual-
Inbox, sent etc. and an Inbox.sbd> Help.sbd with boxes for "Forums ", "Maxtor "
etc. However when I open my Mail program to read and get mail they, "the
Inbox.sbd's" are not there. How can they be in Explorer and not in the program?
 Once I get them there, I can start finishing up with this.

.sbd=subfolders. Look at the right of the Inbox, you should see a "+ ", if you have subfolders. Click on the +, and you should see the subfolders.
The .msf files, on the HD, in the ..sbd folders should have been or should be deleted, although I don't know if it is necessary

.sbd folders are created automatically, and may have no mail. So, I gather that it is not necessary to delete the .msf files, before using the subfolders?
I have an interesting experience. I have one Inbox.sbd folder, with all my pairs of files, like Bookupdate and BookUpdate.msf, etc, and several more, and then a set of .sbd folders, like BookUpdate.sbd, which are totally empty, TB1.0.7.
My 1.5 is more efficient, having streamlined to just the pair of files, and no empty .sbd folders.

It has been my experience that it isn't necessary to delete *.msf files within the *.sbd folders - user created.

My bookmarkbackups folder has 5 copies of my Bookmarks (1.0.7). I have abandoned 1.5.

    Ramona,
you are talking about Firefox, while I was talking about Thunderbird.
As an aside, I had a lot of gripes about FF1.5, and removed it. I just installed 1.5.01rc1. So far it takes off like a shot in memory usage, like its predecessor.

    Fulvio,

Perhaps it was the mention of Bookupdate. That threw me for a moment

As to the "empty" .sbd - TB 1.0.7 creates ONE automagically ( I think this was mentioned)
These "auto" *.sbd are not used/accessable until you manually activate them by creating a "new" folder within an existing folder. Then the NEW folder is listed as an "actual - real" folder ( not as a file) within the existing "autogenerated" *.sbd folder.

{EDIT........Please dis-regard the above -It is misleading - I left it for so as not to confuse anyone following this post
    It is still treated as a file}

I do not know WHY this was instituted. but it is sort of confusing and generates alot of uneeded *.sbd folders.

That is why I asked joe if he had figured it out yet.

    regards:captjlddavis

You mentioned your Bookmarks backup files, and I was comparing mine with yours. Sorry if I threw you off track.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxx.slt

Hi Guys and Gals: After reading posts 9 to 14, I do not think they applied to my problem. I thought Ford made Thunderbird:D

    captjlddavis
NOPE. Did You ? Romana said
    Copy to where??

Scenario:>> pd5.....slt, call it "A ", is the one I backed up to my external HD and also my flash drive. q1lx.....slt, call it "B ", is the one in my profiles on
my PC HD that I got when I reinstalled NS7.0

BIG Question? Could I rename "B" (the one in my current profiles in my HD)
to "A" (the one in my backups) and then RESTORE "A" to the renamed one
in my profiles.??? I just read and re-read this to make sure I did not get my A's and B's mixed up:eek: Am I thinking out-of-the-box:eek:

Of course, posts 9-14 are asides due to the fact that you did not reply.
But post 2 from Ramona, was right on target. You have to remove (cut/paste) the present .slt, and put it on the desktop (I think I had said that), and then copy the .slt from the flash drive, and past it in the same location where you have the previous .slt. In other words, kick out B, and replace it with A. All this with your program closed.
