    in what regard?

guess = get a DNS registrar and sign up. this ain't free and can't see why u'd need it cept for a web site/mail server etc.

eg - explain what u need and maybe why u think u need it

My friend has a file server running and for me to access it he wants a name rather than an IP address from me.

I don't have a fixed IP address but I rarely switch my router off.

hmmm ... if he's using reverse DNS lookups for verification, i'd ask why? ;) ... most 'friends' don't have such and won't need it. but ... that's something for u to cover w/ the friend really.

anywho - u CAN register u'r dynamic IP w/ a service like DYNDNS.ORG which will give u a reversable DSN lookup. if u've got a linksys router, i know them but ... most routers offer same. just find the router setting, sign up at http://www.dyndns.org and u'r done.

I think he just wants to have a name rather than me telling him whenever my IP address changes.

    I have a netgear router.

He mentioned DYNDNS also. But not sure what to do. What do you mean "find the router setting "

Thanks for answering and sorry for being such a plank.

go to dyndns.org and sign up for a free service DNS. they'll let u do a couple acounts free. read the docs basically. u'll need to revisit the page every 30 days w/ user/logon to re-register the DNS setting to u'r IP.

most routers have a setting for dyndns.org that will send the user/password u sign up w/ and register the account. i THINK that this still requires that u pay for the ability w/ dyndns to work. eg - even when i've set this, i still had to return to the web page and hit modify host to keep the thing alive more or less. anywho ... the dyndns is cheap and u can get specific client software to do the re-reg on their site for free/cheap too.

sure thing. dyndns is free and pay. the pay allows u to not login to reregister every 30 days more or less
