    Hi,

I have my friend's computer here now because it has become so slow that something must be wrong with it.

I have scanned disk, defragged disk, ran a registry cleaner, cleaned all the temp files using "Cleanup" program. Ran AVG Virus scan and Ad-Aware. All seems clear with no viruses or spyware.

I am trying to use the Windows Update feature and download the only critical update available: Cummulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB905915).

After is finishes it tells me to restart computer and when I do, I get this message in a DOS window:
Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2
    %1: %2
at least 10 times it repeats itself.
    Then says:
Windows could not upgrade one or more system files before starting. Windows may not start or run properly.,
If Windows fail to start, run SETUP again.
    Press any key to continue.

When I do, it says "Completed updating files, continuing to load Windows.

My system comes up OK now but if I go back to Windows Update, I still get the same update that doesn't seem to install.

Any suggestions on how I can make this work because I tried to update Windows Media Player and it won't allow me to.

I really think something else is wrong with this computer. Is there anyway to run Windows SETUP without wiping everything off her computer. I think maybe there might be some missing files.

    Jean

    P.S. Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

Thanks for your help. I don't know what I did but the computer is now working better.

I couldn't make a startup disk, it just wouldn't boot the computer. Oh well, the computer is faster now after cleaning up everything else and I am not getting that error message anymore so I'm happy for now.

My friend is looking to buy a new computer anyway. I think she really needs to upgrade what she has.

    Thanks for the help.
