I searched most of the postings on Networking, but did not find an answer to my specific question. I now have three computers with xp home installed. I would like to network them together only to share a high speed INTERNET connection, we have been on Dial-up for years mostly because there was nothing else available up here in the sticks. All the Installation guides show one of the computers being hooked up direct to the modem first and then branch out to the other computers. We plan to have the local T.V. cable company just install their line into maybe the Basement of the Resort lodge along with their modem. I was then hopping to just connect a HUB that I have and connect each of the computer lines to the Hub independently.

Is this a possible scenario? We are not interested in sharing printers or each other's computer's Data or Information. We also really do not want to leave any of the computers on just so someone else would like to go on line. Thanks In advance for any help or suggestions loonychoons Lenny Chowns

    No hub then?

Thanks TonyT . It seems that from your reply that I can not use the Hub that I already have? Or should the hub be installed after the Router? Thanks again loonychoons P.S. Yes I hope to be getting Cable Internet.

It depends on how many comps you will be using. A basic router will have 4 ports for comps. But you can hook a hub to one of those router ports and expand the network hooking comps to the hub, up to 253 comps on one router by "daisy chaining" additional hubs and/or switches.

    Thanks For Your Direction.

Tony T. I now own a hard wired 4 position router (wireless did not work because of metal in the walls and distances involved) I now have my 4 XP "S networked through them. Running 1,000 FEET of wire and then installing the RJ45 ends through-out my Lodge and Resort was Lots of fun!!!! I am now waiting for my cable company to install a Modem to connect to the Internet.I will just keep hold of the Hub that a already have just in case that I might like to expand my network. Thanks Again Lenny Chowns P.S. It will be just great to leave DIAL UP behind.

May want to read this brief chart and the accompanying paragraph. Was not ware of a potential "buried cable / network card" issue .....

Thanks for your concern, but all is O.K.

Dennis L. I assure you that the cable is all in the same Building The Lodge, Therefore on the same ground plate and with no measurable potential difference through-out the system. It is a big structure, and I did not use the whole roll of cable. The four computers however where not just next to each other and they are spread out, which meant four relatively longer runs than normal. If I do expand maybe into the other buildings later, I appreciate , you giving me a heads up on the fibre optics option. loonychoons Lenny Chowns
