When using dialup, XP raises a flag with the connection speed. How does one determine the connection speed with DSL?

Right click on the connection icon - the two monitors icon beside the clock - and choose 'Status'.

The speed test works, but I don't have a monitor icon. Thank you both for replying.

Ken, you can get the monitor icon placed in your tasktray by clicking Start/Settings/Network Connections/Local Area Connections. On the General Tab, click the Properties button. Place a tick in the box beside "Show icon in notification area when connected ".

correct, that icon will not show the speed of connections outside the local network, same for the wireless icon. You would have to use a separate software that monitors the connections else use a site that has a speed test. The best test is to go to a few download sites, locate a large game or program, start the download and view the progress rate, kill the download before it completes.

Go here to check your speed. You can check it with four different servers and compare it with other peoples connections. Keep in mind that it may be faster or slower one day than the next due to internet traffic and may vary from server to server at any given time for the same reason.
