I'm running Win98SE. Lately every one out of three times I try to shutdown my computer attempts to execute butt stops with the screen Windows 98 is shutting down. That screen stays on forever or until I shut the power off. Then when I restart I have to wait for the scandisk to complete before reboot. Any suggestions on how to cure this? I did a search and don't see any similar posts. Thank you and to all a Happy and Healthy New Year!

I had the same shutdown problem with 98SE quite some time ago.

I found the problem to be that a program was not shutting down properly.

I had to watch and closely keep track of what I had been running during the session.

I also wound up stopping just about everything that was loading at bootup. Then put them back one at a time. That fixed the problem but I do not even remember just what the program was.

Okay I found out which program is causing my failure to shutdown. It's my DVD burning software. Now that I know which one it is can I do something when I finish with this software to prevent this problem?

If you have more than one type of burning software in your system (say the burning program from a previous drive), uninstall the old software. I would then rerun the installation program of your current burning program.

Check that you have the latest motherboard/chipset drivers. If so, you could go to Device Manager, highlight the IDE controller (under Hard Drive Controllers) and click Remove. It should be automatically reinstalled at reboot.

You could also try booting into Safe Mode, go to Device Manager there and remove anything listed under CD Drives. The DVD burner will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.

Hmmm...are you suggesting that this program has not closed even if it appeared to? Doesn't windows shut all program before exiting? If it can't doesn't it tell you. I've seen this happen many times. I'll check it out the next time I use this software. Thanks.

    Hi,

I'm troubleshooting a very similar problem. Do you have "Fast shutdown" disabled in msconfig /advanced? To check Startup|Run|type msconfig|click on advanced; look at disable fast shutdown checkbox. If it isn't checked, check it and reboot.

I'm finding that this symptom has many cures but not all of them work. :(

In my Win98SE there is no such item to be checked or unchecked.

Maybe that is one of my problems. The answer is "yes" I have as many as 4 different progies that I use to burn dvds. The problem is that each one has a different purpose and I use them all almost weekly.
