I've found that MS article to be quite confusing to most people. In my opinion they should change it. Most people will just copy and paste the lines just as MS shows them and it won't work that way. So, for those that may run into this problem, it needs to look like this for it to work.

1994Canucks--If you are trying to reach the Desktop quickly when you have other windows open, simultaneously click WinKey+M. If you want to go back to the other windows, simultaneously click Shift+WinKey+M. I find this more convenient than using a Show Desktop shortcut.

Even easier? (doesn't close any windows) Rt-clk a blank area on the taskbar, choose toolbars, then desktop, and it will put labeled cheverons on the taskbar that you can click to see a list of desktop icons and a single click on an item in the list is the same as a dbl-clk on the real desktop. The hotspot remains forever, until you reverse the above keystrokes.

1994Canucks: The way I did it was to go to C:\1386\Show Desktop. Drag the Show Desktop icon down into the Quick Launch bar, and it will be there anytime you want to get to the Desktop. Simple enough?

    Deskyop???

Even easier > Go to Desktop in Win Explorer> click on Send To-Click on Desktop
(create shortcut). Then either drag to Quick Launch, which I did or Copy there.
