Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 Laptop with windows xp. 256MB and 2.40GHz. I had a virus some time ago, and although I have rid myself of that, I seem to have some left-over problems.

Every time I shut down my computer I get the following errors:

HIDSXML2.EXE DLL Initialization failed. Application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down.

I get the same error right after that, but with: WDICNV32.EXE.

I just ran bugdoctor and Webroot Sweeper. The bugdoctor came up with quite a few errors and supposedly fixed them, but the shut down problem still exists. I found no errors when I did a sweep of my computer using webroot.

I also downloaded "startuplist.txt" with the following report:

    StartupList report, 01/08/2006, 11:45:01 AM
    StartupList version: 1.52
    Started from : C:\DOCUME~1\Renee\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for startuplist1521[1].zip\StartupList.EXE

Try disabling system restore, then shutdown, then startup & shutdown again to see if error disappears. If joy, turn system restore back on, if no joy then you still may have an undetected infection.

Well, I tried your suggestion, but it didn't work. I still have the error messages. If I have an undetected virus, how do I find it?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your first post contains too much information. Suggest you upgrade hijackthis and run it to get a new log file and post it. There are a few folks that can study it but are turned off by the overkill of information. :D

It was already gone when I went back in and ran hijackthis again. I had run some anti-virus stuff after I posted the last log, so maybe it took it away. The error messages I keep getting when I shut down are still there. I feel like I'm missing something that might have been deleted? Something in registry or the HKLM area?

I tried shutting down background processes and didn't receive any errors. I'm not sure if I did that right or now.

I checked out some of the anti-spyware. . all cost money and I have already paid for several trying to fix this problem.

I need to keep trying to fix it without buying tons of software that doesn't seem to do the trick. I will keep looking I guess.

    Thanks,
    Renee

    Hi Renee,

I checked out some of the anti-spyware. . all cost money and I have already paid for several trying to fix this problem.
That link I gave you is about the programs not to get - Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites - ask here for recommendations.

I tried shutting down background processes and didn't receive any errors.
Does that mean your error free now and don't know which process might have caused it?

What I asked you to do is: shut down a process, shut the system down, and then try another, and so on.

    Regards - Charles

Ok, I guess I was confused with your information. Sorry. I will keep away from that software you showed me. I guess I better try the shutting down process thing again. . sounds like that is going to take me awhile.
