I don't know what else to title this post. But when I insert any disk into any of the CD/DVD rom drives on my computer the choose program window pops up but it is blank. This just started today after having burned a few videos. I have cleaned disk, recently defraged and restarted my computer several times. Nothing has worked.

How do you fix this? Everything else is working fine.

Not sure I understand. The CD-ROM drive is a Read drive (not Write). Are you saying the CD is not being read? Is this still the case when you click on the CD-ROM drive after opening My Computer? If you right click on the CD-ROM drive icon (with the CD in the drive) and then Properties, does the next window indicate that there is content on that CD?
Is this happening only with CD's you have burnt, or any CD that you put in the CD-ROM drive?
Until we hear further, here is what Google offers on that message

I did a search on Goggle myself and read at least 30 links including MS and none of them addressed the issue.

I have both a cd/dvd rom drive and a dvd writer drive.

There is no problem with seeing the disk, when I browse the drive it tells me what is in there. And if I put an audio cd in the window pops up (blank) asking what program I want to use and same with a dvd. But the list is not there nor is the option to choose another program that is not in the list, which in this case is no list at all.

I can open the program I want to use such as Power DVD to view a movie and the movie starts as soon as the program opens. Same with an audio cd when I open my media player it immeditaely recognizes there is a disk in and starts playing it. It doesn't matter whether it is the original disk or one I have copied, the behavior is the same.

The drives are functioning properly, it's the pop up window to choose which program to open the disk with that is corrupt.

I did not find anything relating to this problem with the goggle link you gave me.

Ok for some reason it has started working some. It now only does this when I insert a blank disk into the dvd rw drive. I have a HP Lightscribe 740b DVD writer and it doesn't matter if I use a Lightscribe disk or regular dvd or cd, it brings up a blank choose program window.

Jim I think the problem is with the autorun window. Is this right whompuscat? You put a cd or dvd in the drive and the autorun feature pops up asking you what you want to use to play it? If so, I did a quick search at the Google groups and found somebody that had the same problem. Kelly Theriot answered them and point them to her web page and told them to run the "restore autoplay icon" regfile. The person never posted back as to whether it fixed the problem or not so I don't know if she misunderstood or if your problem is one of the things that file will fix. You can give it a try though. It can't hurt anything. It's on line 17, left side. Have you tried system restore?

    Edit:
I got this in before I read your last post so I don't know if it's really the same thing or not. I was under the impression that it was all cds. You can give the regfile a try if you want. I don't know if it's a fix or not but it might be worth a try.

Yes Zander that is what I am talking about. And I did run the restore auto play from the link you gave and it did not fix the problem.

In viewing properties of the drive it lists is as a cd-rom drive, not as a dvd rewrite drive. Under autoplay you can select each type of file and it brings up the options, but when I click on blank cd the box is empty.

The enable cd recording option is checked.

I assume that it is not recognizing it as a RW drive. And when searching HP site there is very little about the Lighscribe, and did not find any software or updates for it.

Well, I think I'd give system restore a try (if you haven't already). If that doesn't work you could try removing the drive in device manager, reboot and see if windows can sort things out when it reinstalls it.

Ok I unistalled and rebooted AGAIN! Windows installed it and this time I got a window saying I had to reboot for it to work properly, which I did (haven't gotten that window before). In My computer now shows correctly dvd rw drive, but click on the drive and it says inacessible. So I go in and select the recording tab and click the record cd box. This changed it to a CD drive instead of a DVD RW drive.

I called HP tech support for the DVD writers (different division of HP and not listed on web site). The tech really had no idea what I was talking about and said there was no software for it and told me to call back tomorrow and ask for Level 2 support. But I am not sure this is a drive problem but a windows problem.

Did you use some new software for this or is it software you've always had. If it's new, I'd try uninstalling it, reboot and then see if it works as it should.

After hours of searching on Google I finally fixed this problem. Several days ago I had downloaded and installed BlindWrite, Alcohol, DVDFab and WinRar. I immediately uninstalled them. I found a link on Google relating to BlindWrite changing the writing engine or something like that so I suspect that was the one that had caused the problem.

I just scanned my registry with Registry First Aid for any entries that were left by these programs and deleted them.

I am not sure which one caused the problem but after rebooting it shows my dvd rw drive correctly and gives me the autoplay option window......... and it is NOT blank :)

Why it took several days to cause this problem I do not know but it did.

    Thanks all for your help.

I have the same problem with my Windows XP Autoplay Dialog box appearing, but being blank (no options to choose from). The only thing I've installed recently was AVG, and uninstalled my Norton Systemworks 2005 (too buggy). I really don't want to install it again. Any idea how to get my programs to jump back into my Autoplay Dialog box again?
