I had hard disk problems and went out and bought a new hard disk. I want to install windows on it. The installation starts fine but after it copies some files and resets I get the following error:

    STOP: C0000221 {BAD IMAGE CHECKSUM}
The image olethk32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum doesn't match the computed checksum.

This happens over and over again. I rerun the installation reformat and the same thing. Now it wont even do a full format. The 0% gets stuck at 0%. But the quick format still works. I don't think the drive would cause this since it is brand new. Any help would be appreciated...

    Thanks

There seems to be some problem with your media/cd drive. try installing from some other media/cd drive.

I have tried all of the methods....swapped RAM, used a different CD, used a different CD drive, still the same error persists. I checked the Hard drive and it seems to be in working condition.

Check if the cable connection are secure - both on the motherboard and harddisk / cdrom.

Are you able to try this new harddrive on another machine?

I tried the hard drive in another machine but I receive a similar error message. I performed all of the hard drive checks and they do not show any errors. Are there any hard drive errors that will not be picked up by error checking programs??

Could be an error in the logic board, difficult to say. What kind of hard disk it is - PATA, SATA 1 or SATA 2 ?

curious if u did a partition purge or used any software that came w/ the drive in question to initialize it?

if u can, purge the entire disk and go clean install

run the drive's diagnostics - usually it's on the CD but i'd opt to get it from the maker's support site since it's probably newer version

ensure that the machine's BIOS supports the drive directly. they may have a bios update that's required if this drive is big.

name the make/model of the drive

define exactly how it's connected - ide/sata on a solo connection as master or slave or ... be specific here

is u'r win installer valid/legit - had to ask

I figured out the problem. The hard drive is hosed. I finally downloaded the manufacturers software instead of 3rd party software and it was able to detect errors. I'm just going to exchange it. Thanks

kostik17, just curious - what 3rd party software were you using?

To name a couple, I used the hard drive check in partition magic, and also used chkdsk with windows.

Have never used partition magic, so unable to comment on that. chkdsk /f /r should be able to pick almost all the hard errors but its not 100% accurate in some situations (yours was probably one of them). I have found Steve Gibson's Spinrite to be an excellent util for checking hard disk. It takes a long time but is much more thorough. As always, manufacturer's utils may be able to do better.
