Is there any type of software by microsoft, or any other company, that can let a network administrator monitor what web sites users are visiting and at what times they are going to these site?

We have been having some trouble with people downloading unsuitable software at work and would like to be able to find out who and when they are doing so.

    thanks!

Many firewall and/or web proxy products will give you this sort of information in their logs. Certainly Microsoft ISA Server can do so.

First place to start - if you have a firewall (which I would strongly advise having), check any logs and find tools for analysing them (if only a decent text search app like Inforapid Search & Replace

This assumes you are sharing a network internet connection. If people are connecting independantly then tracking is more difficult.

    rakem,

your talking about (just one possibility) content filtering/monitoring. In the *nix world you will commonly see this referred to squid, dans guardian.

    - google "dansguardian "
    - look at http://www.squidguard.org/intro/
    - http://www.censornet.com/ ...this is a free ISO that can be installed on any 386 or better machine.

I would assume there are also tons of windows solutions as well. Point being, your searching for a content filtering solution whether you are looking to monitor the traffic, or specifically stop it.
