Working on my sister's computer. Believe my niece and a little friend messed it up. I had to repair Win XP Pro and that went fine. Brought the computer back to my place and hooked it up to my network. It still will not connect to the interent. I've uninstalled/installed the NIC and XP found the driver. Nothing changed. I went to the command prompt and tried to renew/release, etc in the IPCONFIG and still nothing. Device manager says the card is working fine and the green light is showing.

Just to try and get it going, I put in my cable internet access cd hoping it would reset whatever and I could get in on the net. It cannot connect.

What should I do next???

is it using dhcp? if not, renew won't help.

uninstall the card from devman or add/rem hardware. once done, power down and pull the card. then power up and shutdown. reinstall the card. now setup network w/ dhcp

oowee--What happens if you go to Control Panel|Network Connections|right click on the connection you want to use and choose Repair?

It instantly says that IP cannot be repaired when I try to do that through network connections.

I'm gonna try the earlier suggestion and see how that goes. I've pulled out the NIC so and booted. Next I'll try installing and see how that goes.

Removing the NIC and rebooting did not work.

Going through the network connections says that "the IP address could not be renewed and the DNS resolver cache cannot be purged and it could not refresh all DHCP addresses "

name the names. what machine make/model, what nic make/model, what router make/model

did u do the HW remove in control panel first? or did u just pull the nic and reboot? two entirely different things ;) ... there are specific reasons i mentioned the order exactly as i did

Repairing XP, as in booting with an xp install cd, will NOT remove spyware and the files that spyware-malware puts on the comp. Many malware now hose the network connections. Suggest scanning computer w/ HijackThis and post the scan log here.

I removed the NIC with the remove hardware, then shut down and pulled out the card. Then I rebooted. It's a Compaq 833mhz, Realtek NIC, and Linksys router. I took the router out of the configuration as well and had the same results.

I will give the HijackThis a shot this afternoon and retype the results on here.

HijackThis have a feature to save the scan log which can be copy+paste.
    Where in VA are you?

good deal. u may wanna search here or google on 'repair xp ip stack' and u'll find some solutions to the IP end if that's the issue. there's a netsh command that does this but it escapes me. someone else here might have it tho.

brain went in gear. command is:

netsh int ip reset [ log_file_name]

oowee--If malware is the problem perhaps your Winsock has become corrupt. You might get help using LSP Fix after removing the malware.

Bummer, the Winsock fix didn't work either. Well, hmmm, guess I'll save her important stuff like pics, files, etc and anything else she wants then wipe the hard drive.

    :(

First, turn OFF System Restore by rt clicking My Computer/select properties/ sts restore tab

    Next, use HijackThis to FIX:

    O16 - DPF: {E7DBFB6C-113A-47CF-B278-F5C6AF4DE1BD} - http://download.abacast.com/download...basetup144.cab

    next:
delete ALL folders & files in c/windows/temp
    delete ALL folders & files in c/docs & settings/username/local settings/temp
delete temp internet files for each user
    delete ALL files in c/windows/prefetch

    next:
run antivirus and any anti spyware apps like adaware and spybot search&destroy

    next
reboot & if network joy & no issues then re-enable system restore.

Chances are there will still be undetected malware on this computer because you will not be able to update the av and antispyware apps. However,. you CAN install adaware and spybot on another comp, update it and then burn the c/program files/adaware and c/program files/spybot dirs to a cdr and copy them to the other comp & they will run fine without having to install them.
