    Hi all,
I just assisted a friend load Win XP Pro on her PC.
Originally it was attacked by popups re: "your registry is stuffed..." etc.

I D/Led updates from MS which alleviated that prob, only to find that everytime she boots it starts Dialup. Close that down and click IE - that starts Dialup. OE does the same....

I'm tearing what's left of my hair out looking for some elusive setting without luck.

    Someone HELP !!!!!!!!!

I've settled down now.....LOL. Anyone got an idea?

    Thanks,
    Den

Internet Options/Connections Tab/choose one of the 3 choices for dialing

If no joy, then comp probably has a dialer trojan/spyware.

Is it trying to dial the legitimate ISP? If so then some program on startup is trying to access the net. Run MSCONFIG (Start-Run type msconfig and OK) then use it to disable all startup items until you identify the program and deal with it accordingly.

If the dial up is spurious then I would concur with TonyT and suggest you check for a Dialer. If this is the case contact your telephone provider and get them to block/bar premium rate calls from your number as this is usually the purpose of a dialler, to make money for some scumbag in Chile or some other place.

It only continues to attempt to dial the ISP - no nasty O/S calls.
I don't know if the ISP was set up with a disk or not, but I will check msconfig.

[EDITED by skeet - he said something really stupid before reading OPs post - not uncommon] ;)

check u'r IE's tools/inetops/connections tab and see what's there. should be set to 'lan' if u'r on cable/dsl/etc

if u'r email is non-ms (not outlook or OE) than i'd check that too. IE settings are 'shared' w/ ms mailers so ... changing there should change the mail option as well - i think

    Thanks guys,
My friend used an ISP-supplied CD to load the network connection.

When I went to 'msconfig' I discovered *.exe that was installed by said CD that was causing the prob. Program disabled, problem solved.

    Thanks again,
    Den
