Problem: When Windows 98SE starts the folder C:\Windows\System\OOBE\Setup is open. This is an annoyance.

    What I've tried:

    1. I looked in the Start group and found no icons.
    2. I ran Msconfig/startup and didn't find a corresponding entry.
    3. I opened the registry and looked for entries in the run and run services keys. I found none that applied.

When it started: After I began running the setup for MSN Network, changed my mind and aborted it.

    Thanks for your assistance.

If there is no immediate solution, I would run the MSN Network setup through to completion, then uninstall it.

Don't know if this will help or not but it's been the cause of other folders opening at startup in the past. Look in the root of your c: drive and see if there's an autorun.inf file there. If so, delete it, reboot and see what happens.

Use Notepad to view the "Load=" and "Run=" lines in the Win.ini file. Look for an entry which could cause the Explorer to open (ie, C:\Windows), see if two or more spaces separate commands on the lines or look for a comma at the end of the lines. If any of these conditions exist, use Notepad to alter the Win.ini file. For two or more spaces, change it to one space. Delete any commas at the end of a line or any reference to Explorer. After making the changes, save the file, close Notepad and reboot.

Thanks all. I didn't have much luck with most of your suggestions. So I decicded to take the "Kill a flea with an atom bomb" approach. I formatted the HDD and re installed everything. It has taken me three days but to put everything back, omitting a few fluf things. The patient died; the operation was a success and then the patient arose from a backup drive.:)
