    This is a strange one.

Cut or Copy in Word will allow me to paste to other applications or other Word documents but if I close Word then re-open it the copy has been forgotten. This doesn't happen on my other PC's just a laptop. Does anyone know of a reason for this?

I don't have Word so this is just a wild guess but maybe there's an option in Word to clear the clipboard contents on exit? Have a look in the options and see. If not, hang tight. More than likely somebody will have some idea.

AFAIK Office has it's own Clipboard which holds more items than the Windows Clipboard which is limited to 1 item. Closing Word presumably closes the Office Clipboard.

Look in Word/Office Help for more info.

My friend who's laptop has this "error" is prepared to live with it but is concerned that it is part of some other problem because Word on other PC's doesn't do this.

There is an area for cut and paste options but none that would cause this "empty clipboard on exit ".

    from word2003 help on clipboard:

    Turn off the Office Clipboard
    Show All
    Hide All
On the Clipboard task pane (task pane: A window within an Office application that provides commonly used commands. Its location and small size allow you to use these commands while still working on your files.), click Options.
Clear the Show Office Clipboard Automatically check box.
Clear the Show Office Clipboard When Ctrl+C Pressed Twice check box.
Note To copy items to the Clipboard while it is turned off, select the Collect Without Showing Office Clipboard check box.

i've no idea if this really helps but i'd suspec that office clipboard is off on one of the machines.

i can confirm that clipboard works outside off for pastes on mine. i'm only doing text and i'm using the same version on both machines.

i'd be curious as to each machine's office config in terms of 'custom install' to 'run all from my machine'. thinking that maybe the lappie has 'less' office cuz of space or such ;)

As a workaround there are lots of other programs like Clipboard, but which will store what you copy (including multiple items) and will not erase when you close the program.
