I'm hoping I can get your opinions on this.

I'm looking for an ATX FF mobo with PCI-Express archetecture. This is my first venture into this type of mobo so I'm doing my homework. The main reason for this switch is I'm about ready to upgrade my vid card and the GT 6800 is too pricey in AGP form factor so I may as well make the switch.

Questions: I would like to contiune to use my existing RAM from my A7N8X, since I have 3 GB of it.

Socket A would be good but I really didn't find an offerings by ASUS for Socket A.

Thanks in advance for any opinions you can share.

I am now looking into the Asus A8R-MVP. Although not Socket A, it looks like a nice board.

    Hi mklangelo!

Are you interested in reusing the processor? If not, as you have noticed, Socket A is dead. It is three generations old (soon four).

The Asus A8R-MVP has integrated graphics but you plan to clamp a GT 6800 on it? A suggestion, have a look at GA-K8N Pro-SLI which have no integrated graphics but similar in all other respects.

I have recently built two computers, based on motherboards in the "K8N-series" and they work very well. Driver installation is really easy, in with the CD, wait until the computer has been analyzed, hit the OK button and in a minute or two you're up and running.

As for the GA-K8N Pro-SLI, the price is great, it holds a whopping 6GB of Ram.

The only thing that gives me pause is the passive cpu cooling. Maybe I'm old school, but I want a fan on top of my CPU.

4 GB according to the Details spec and since dual channel memory, if you have 3 sticks of 1 GB, you would have to get another stick to get the full potential (2 + 2 GB). For best performance, they should be matched pairs or at least of the same make and model.

I have fitted fans on both CPU's using the three pin connector ...... ...... any CPU today would get fried without active cooling.

    mklangelo,

If you are going to use a GT6800 video card... you want to look at a nVidia based board. The ASUS A8N-SLI looks comparable to the A8R-MVP you were looking at, see it HERE . I'm currently using a A8N-SLI Premium and like it alot. There's 'passive' cooling on the chipset not the CPU. (I use a Thermaltake Typhoon on the cpu)

Not to hijack my own thread...LOL but I'm going to slap one of those Typhoons on my present system. Since starting to play BF2 which is a processor heavy application, I'm needing the extra cooling. My 3000+ always did run a bit on the hot side, now that's a major concern with BF2.

I think a complete rebuild is out of my budjet right now. I'm considering the Radeon X850 PRO 256MB AGP upgrade from my present 9800 Pro.
