Set the boot order to CDROM,C,A and other options as well.Formatted the hard drive and I get the message improper boot media or some such. I can change and boot from A drive. But I wanted to do a clean install from the CD and can not get to autorun from that drive. I booted to a floppy and can read the CD drive fine so don't think it is a drive failure. Suggestions?

I would try making the hard disk the last boot option, FDD > CD-ROM > HDD. With that order, it will seek all removable media before the hard disk. If no floppy in the FDD, it will continue to seek the CD-ROM.

Next test would be to find out if the CD boots on another computer.

I did this but for some reason it does not seek the CD (light on CD reader does not light) I tried doing the same with A drive first and it worked. I know the cd drive works and can read it when booting to the floppy but when set to read the CD first it does not seek there and gives me the error message.

Not stupid at all.I just don't know how to do it. Setup has to run under windows but when autorun operates it installs this itself. How to autorun is the question I need answered. Sorry to be so unclear.:)

Kind of have two threads going on about the same issue....

Is the Win2k cd you're using a regular Store bought cd or is it a copy of an original?

Do/did other cd's autorun ok on this machine?

Not a fix for the problem but a workaround:

Set the boot order to FDD > CD-ROM > HDD.

Boot to a Win9X start disk and choose "with CD-ROM support ".

Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive.

At the A:\ command prompt, type: X: > ENTER (where X: represents the actual drive letter of the CD-ROM).

At the X:\ command prompt, type cd i386 > ENTER

At the X:\i386\ command prompt, type winnt > ENTER

    This should start the installation!
