I went into the BIOS and AUDIO is enabled?
Also the mute boxes are all clear.
Also in the Sounds and Audio devices box it says "this device is working correctly "................ and it was untill I changed to XP?

I'd love to get to the bottom of this soon, I'm missing my music & my p/c doubles as an answer phone,or at least it will when I fix this and find a compatable answer phone and fax software. Megaphone no longer works in XP either. (needs windows messaging) or at least that's what it says when I try to re-install it?
But Hey! one problem at a time, let's get the sounds sorted first.

Googled a bit on this ....

From here I gleaned enough info to get to here ....

    http://support.gateway.com/support/default.asp

Try entering the serial no of your computer and take it from there.

This link in the first URL .....

    http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/INTEL/M00446/m00446nv.shtml

has driver downloads for a similar motherboard, possibly the same as yours. XP is not mentioned - not surprising, but W2k drivers might do - at your risk here

Wait for further posts from others before you load them.

It would have to be a Gateway. I would not be surprised if suitable XP drivers were never written. You’ll have to get your serial number Quiz, follow the first Gateway link from Pete to find out what it is. Post it here.

The Intel 440BX was a common chipset so there will be drives for it, just maybe not from Gateway. It was so common when XP came out that it may well be that the default drivers you currently have installed will be good enough. Still worth checking however and definitely worth finding out the exact specs of the gateway board to find other drivers. There were many different versions and specs for 440BX boards.

Do you know if your machine is as it came from the factory, or could it have had hardware upgrades/changes done at anytime?

I put my serial number in..........0001208213
only to be told that they only offer U.S. Support. and to go to the European site.
They did not recognise the number, too old I guess?

I followed your other link to download a driver that might work, but it never.

I do remember now that the Video card is 16 mb and the sound 8mb... it was good when I bought it, at least that was what the salesman said.
I did not know then that the sound card was part of the motherboard. I thought it was seperate or part of the Vid card.
I am starting to think that my only option is to find a cheap motherboard with an improvement on my current 16 mb vid and 8 mb sound onboard.

Hmm - felt sure that I had posted this, obviously not ....

Basic question - are you sure that the speakers are plugged in - powered up and switched on with the volume control off minimum? Do they snap, crackle or hiss when you boot up?
Unfortunately you will not find a motherboard to take your current CPU - 7 weeks is a long time in computer developments, let alone 7 years. I doubt that a modern board would fit your case as sizes have changed.

Does youir TV card have a sound output? - I would think so, but OTOH I have never used a TV card.

Don't really know what else to suggest bar trying a plugin soundcard.

One more thought. We used to see a lot of this on this board with win98 and an awful lot of the time it was caused by an IRQ conflict between the modem (if it's a winmodem) and the soundcard. XP handles IRQ's differently so I don't know if it's possible this is the problem or not. Check the properties of both of them in device manager and on the resources tab check to see what IRQ they're using. If they're both using the same one, try disabling the modem, reboot and then see if you have sound. It's probably not the problem but it's worth taking a look at it.

Good point Zander. Also Quiz, is there any problems at all showing in Device Manager?

Googeling around has shown a lot of people with the same Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) having no sound after upgrading to XP.

According to this these are the XP drivers for your sound.
You can get them direct from the Gateway site.

This looks promising so personally I would try this first. If still no joy then try removing the sound device in Device Manager and reboot and let XP detect it anew.

    McTavish you're a STAR

You'll be pleased to know that I am writing this with the sound of Bryan Adams belting out 'Summer of 69'
You obviously know where to look. Ta very much !

I've bundled it into a nice folder 17.9mb of it for future use if it gets discontinued.
So if you hear of anyone else with the same problem I can send it to them.
I have also deleted all the others that I tested first, to avoid confusion later on.
Well done that man, and thanks to everyone else for thier help with this.

    Tv Card is idle

    Petec
the tv card probably does have it's own sound out put but as of yet I have not been able to find the installation c/d.
I was looking for it last year when I changed my hard drive.
So it's just sitting in the back idle at the moment. I am not too worried about it as it was a real pain on the 98 system allways causing 'crashes'.
    Thanks for your help.

    Cheers Pete.

    You’re welcome Quiz.
As always Gateway support was hopeless and I had to find the file elsewhere so that I knew what to look for on the Gateway site. Didn’t find the chipset drivers however, but seeing as how it’s Intel you should be ok with the XP ones. Microsoft and Intel were in bed together back when XP came out so it’s a fair bet there is a good selection of compatible chipset drivers on the XP disk, especially for the 440BX as it was widespread at the time.

One thing I would suggest Quiz is that you turn off some of the fluff as your processor’s size is borderline for XP. The first page of this article is what I would suggest. The rest of the article goes more in depth and worth a look when you’ve got time.
