    Hello there,
after giving up trying to upgrade to Windows 2000 from Windows 98, I went and got a Windows XP Pro.
The upgrade went well apart from Norton internet security which had to be removed and re-installed, only it did not want to re-install and became a 3 hour pain. Done now though.
My new problem is Sound, I have not got any?
I have updated the driver and XP says it is working, only it is not?
    Ideas anyone?
    Quiz.

    Hello Quiz,

No sound at all, even when playing a cd? Or is it the XP sounds - such as when XP is booting - shutting down?

Depending on your answer, two different problems.

    Regards - Charles

On the motherboard CD - if you do not have that log onto the mobo manufacturer's web site and download the drivers from there.

You probably think I know what motherboard I have installed.
P/c is now 7 years old and I probably knew once, but not now.
suppose there is an easy way to find out though?

    Interesting that,
I run the program, looked up 'motherboard'
only to find a bit that said on board devices sound= 'ensoniqu' disabled ?

must be able to enable it somewhere?

If you have a plug in sound card that would/should disable the onboard sound chip. Suggest you temporarily remove the plug in sound card and try again. You may need to enable the on board sound in BIOS.

If you now have the motherboard details you should download the XP chipset drivers for the mobo - regardless of the sound problem :)

    That sounds bad then.

dragged the tower out 'gateway performance 450'

and yes it looks like an 'on board' sound card.

    Where next?

    Start > Run > type in msinfo32 > OK

Lefthand pane of System Information > Components > Sound Device

What is reported there? Name, Manufacturer and Status will do for now plus Driver.

It sounds to me like it's onboard sound and it's disabled in the bios (maybe). Have a look in there and see whether it's enabled or not.

The driver that is loaded - es1371mp.sys - should be OK for XP according to various sources on Google.

Check in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices that the sound is not muted.

If the sound chip really is disabled look in the BIOS for an entry to enable it.

It's late here so I'll pick up on this in the morning.

    Install the chipset drivers.

In XP click Start and then Help and Support. In the window that opens there will be a list on the left hand side under Pick a Help Topic. Click on any one of these and in the new pane that opens at the bottom you will see "˜Tools’ click on this and then from the list of tools click My Computer Information. In the right hand pane click "˜View general system information about this computer’ then copy and paste all the details from the Specifications heading. Someone will then point you to the download for your chipset drivers.

The chipset drivers are all important and is what allows all the hardware on your computer to talk to each other. The default drives that XP installed can in some cases be fine, but if they are not it could cause all kinds of hardware and software errors down the line.
