over a year ago my computer was attacked by malware and it deleted a lot of files. my administrative tools file is empty because of this. i had nothing to role back to when it happened so ive just be doing without.

i got a printer for christmas. i tried to install it but i got a message that the spooler is turned off. i searched on how to turn it on but with my administrative tools being empty i cant follow the steps microsofts help site says to do.

does anyone know another way to do it or how to get back my adminstrative tools?

    i'd consider a reinstall but ... i always do ;)

in any event, can u do:

    start/run services.msc

and get the services panel open? if so, see the spooler there and u should be able to start it and set it to auto

okay skeet, i tried that first cause its quicker and this is what i got displayed

could not start the print spooler service on local computer

error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start

how do i fix that problem that i have no idea what to do about?

and i would just reinstall but the disks that came with my computer with my copy of xp on them got smashed by the same person that downloaded the malware onto my computer. he destroyed a lot of stuff right before moving to tucson last year. caused many many problems in my household. i just dont have the money to buy a new copy of xp

    Hello Lucky Kitten,

An alternative way to get to Admin tools:

Right click on My Computer > Manage.

    Regards - Charles

Print Spooler depends on Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - make sure that's running.

About your lack of discs: worth a shot, contact the OEM of your computer and explain the situation to them, they - at a fee probably, might replace those discs that came with your system. If they do charge, it would be less then a copy of XP.

    Regards - Charles

yikes. sorry to hear but ... good news = he's in tucson at least ... hope u'r far, far away.

i would go the OEM replacement route suggested. they SHOULD be able to assist u in replacement set for minimal/shipping costs. this is something to do even if u get it fixed w/o them. eg - u'll need em down the road anyway.

check charlesvar's RPC suggestion as well but i'd think that the system wouldn't run at all w/o it. if RPC isn't there or running ... i'd suspect that spooler would be the least of the problems ;)

is there a local who can help ya out? even a usersgroup would be worth a shot depending on how badly u need this machine fixed as opposed to clean install. based on what u relate, i'd say the damage is beyond a simple fix routine.

in any event, remote assistance may help some. if u can manage to get online, MAYBE u could arrange a 'remote assistance' call thru messenger or MSN messenger. u can PM me here and i'll do it for ya.
