I have three full columns of programs and was wondering if Windows XP will automatically make a fourth column if I add more programs to my computer. If not, then where do I go to make shortcuts for my desktop so I won't forget that they are installed (Windows Explorer)?

    Hi Karen,

Don't know if XP will create more columns, I don't think so, what will happen is XP will indicate continuation with the same type of arrow that indicates sub-menus, an example: next to Accessories.

Create a folder called Desk Top shortcuts and put shortcuts into that. You can create shortcuts by right clicking executables > send to, send to the Desktop and from there move it to this folder.

You can also use the QuickLaunch tool bar - has to be enabled, same method of move from Desktop to the QL, or make a shortcut to this new folder from there. I use the QL, I can't stand anything on the Desktop - nothing there other than the Rycycle Bin :)

    Regards - Charles

What I have done is create folders for various things and but them over the Start Menu.

For example. These are folders that show up when I click on Start.

    Audio Related
    Cleaners
    Games
    Mail
    Network Games
    Printing & Web
    System Tools.
    XXX
    XXXXXX
    XXXX
The Xs represent various other things like special Web sites etc.

I then moved/created shortcuts to vairious things on the Desktop and then moved them into the proper folder. This way I only get one column when I click start. Keeps the Desktop much cleaner.

I have not tried this too many times so I hope it works because it shows more and better than I can write.

OK, but now that I have discovered that some of the newer programs installed are not showing in the columns, how do I find where they are so I can create a special folder?
In other words, where is the easiest place to look to do that?

    Thanks

Right click on the start button and choose explore. Then, double click on programs.
