"Files that cannot be defragmented"

Ran defrag on a friend's computer (Win XP Pro), and noticed the following at the end of the summary:

Files that cannot be defragmented:
\Program Files\Broderbund\The Print Shop\Content\PS15PART.CDT (45 fragments, file size 303 MB)
\Program Files\American Conquest\ALL.GSC (47 fragments, 666 MB)
\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\errors.log (22,434 fragments, 3.59 GB)

The first two are small enough not to be of much concern, but what's the story with the huge MS AntiSpyware error log? Is that something that can be "cleaned out" (deleted?)? If it has to be saved for some reason, is there a way to include it in the defragmentation process?

Did you do an error-check on the drive before you tried the defrag?
The first 2 files sound like junk left over when the computer freezes when a program is opened and you have to shut it off in an abnormal way.
The third file could be worms, trojan horses, etc found my MS Antispyware and fragments were removed from various files, but I am really not sure of that.
To do the error check, open my compter, right click on the C-drive and choose properties. You will see the option for error checking and defrag. Do the error check. You will usually have to reboot the computer for it to start.

 

No, we didn't run an error check first - I'll give that a shot now.

MS AS's error log is a log of any problems MS AS encounters in loading - memory usage - file accessing and the like. You can open yourself, its a Notepad file.

The fact that its so big is an indication that its running into problems such as I mentioned above. It can be deleted - when MS AS needs to report, it'll recreate it. To reassure yourself that deleting will not cause problems in running MS AS, copy out to another folder before deleting it. Then at some point, get rid of the copy.

On some systems, MS AS does not run well, this may be one of them. The biggest complaint is high memory usage.

I run MS AS as a scanner only, and that log is very small.
