My old HDD died. Budget prevents me from buying a new system. I am running Windows 98SE on a P-III 450 class system with lots of ram. Due to age of system and OS constraints I have the new WD 80g HDD riding on an Adaptac Ultra 115 IDE card.

My question is how do I get the hard drive's file system out of Compatibility Mode? Windows Help says something about Autoexec encountering a driver that requires Real Mode or something like that. It says if I delete the driver and replace it the OS won't put the File System into Compatibility mode.

I've mucked about with computers for quite a while, but this one has me baffeled. A little help, please...

    Thank You,

Have a look in your autoexec.bat file. It'll be in the root of your c drive. See if there's anything referencing this in there. You can open it in notepad. If you aren't sure what it's all about, copy and paste the contents of it into this thread. Maybe I or somebody else can help you out. Also, it might not to also have a look at your config.sys file (also in the root of the c drive). That can be opened in notepad also.

I was able to find a fix. Turns out some key drivers to the Adaptic ATA 115 card the drive was connected to weren't instaled properly. I ran the driver install disk now everything works fine.:)
