I am reinstalling Win 98 on a PII machine. I decided to swap the HDD for another. After I installed Windows and rebooted during installations, I got a DOS Scandisk, it said it could not fix the problem and to run Windows Scandisk. Windows Scandisk fixed some problems, but said it could not fix all. At the next reboot all I got was a flashing cursor after POST.
You beaut! I love these problems.
Switched the drive into another computer. Same report about not be able to fix the problem. Due to the fact that Scandisk is running a long time in Sector 1, it looks like a bad sector in the Boot Sector.
I ran Norton Utilities Disk Doctor from the CD. Sectors are marked as bad in Sector 1 and several other places on the disk. I am thinking of putting it in the bin...ahh, NO...I may as well diagnose it to death :D.
Next step Seagate Utilities, reports inconclusive problems.
OK, may as well zero format. Full or Quick? May as well do Full which will make it quick (death that is :) ). Zero format runs to conclusion  .
Run Seagate Seatools, it says there may be a problem with the cable. I had noticed that the cable was really hard to remove from the drive (and the only way to remove it is to pull on the cable, not the connector). Put in a spare cable. Reran Seatools, all clear. Reran Disk Doctor, no bad sectors!

This drive lives to fight another day! :)
