HP Scanner HP4370 Scanjet no scanning

My new scanner. HP4370 Scanjet, will not scan. I bought the scanner in Nov, 2005 and just scanned a few documents previously, it seemed to work fine then. The USB connection is fine. The power connection is good. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software which it said was correctly installed. On installation it stated the connection was good. When I try scanning the carriage moves just a fraction then reseats itself. Of course the next time I try scanning the DDE is still open and I get an error message saying it can't connect. I am running Windows XP Home. I have 512 MB of RAM on an AMD Athlon 64 that is 6 months old.
When I tried scanning yesterday I had a page of vertical colored lines. I did have a speaker on the shelf about 2 feet above the scanner and suspected it may have been magnetic interference I moved the speaker and shut them off.

Thank you BBS Support. I found out my problem is with the scanner and not a software problem.
