I'm getting intermittent outages with my cable modem. It's obliviously a RF problem, possibly cause by my inexperience installing F connectors on RG6QS. Should the foil and or wire braids be in contact with the connector? If so, why? Thanks

Yes, the braid or foil must slide over the neck of the connector and butt up to the back of the swivel nut. This will insure a return path for the RF and also provide the proper shielding to prevent radiation from interfering with other services.

Here's a diagram that may help.

That's a break so long as it isn't your modem. I hope you rent it like I choose to do.

Nevertheless, you should correct any connectors you have installed without continuity between the braid and the connector. In addition to the issues I mentioned before there are some safety concerns as well since the coax is grounded at the point of connection to your house and that ground should be conveyed all the way to your computer via the braid. If you notice that your coax isn't grounded at the point of connection, call your ISP and request that it be brought up to code. (N.E.C. Article 800-40)

Even though it may work with an open braid, the impedence of the line will be upset and some odd things can happen on coax lines with unsociable terminations.

    Good luck.

    Hello Zephyr,

Yes is a rental, a COM 21 to be exact. I did redo all the F connectors correctly this time and the splitter on the side of the house has a 10 gauge (maybe larger) solid ground wire attached.

    All,

Out of curiosity, what download and upload speeds do the ISPs down that way offer with their basic packages? I’m getting 256 down and 64 up for $39.99

George, I get 2800 Kb/s down and 128 Kb/s up on the Adelphia cable system. Currently it costs $54.95/mo. which includes $5 for the modem rental.

I probably should have bought my own modem years ago but I like single source responsibility when I have problems.

    Best regards.
