my IE takes too long to open

My IE takes way too long to first open (about 18 secs). This just started happenning about the same time I upgraded from Norton Internet Sec 2004 to 2006 (about a month ago). Maybe just a coincidence ?? I run Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, SpySweeper & Ad-aware; all are up-to-date and all tell me my system is clean. My OS is Win 2k pro (also up-to-date) and I use broadband cable w/ a d-link router. Openning my browser windows used to be a snap, now it's just painful to watch. Somebody....some advice, please.

 

I have $5 that says you have answered your own question.

The newer Software more than likely has more and bigger files loading. Doing more work. And putting a heavier load on the system.

I have also found that it makes a difference as to what site is used as the Homepage.

It will be interesting to see what others have to say because I was thinking (thinking only) of going to Norton.

probably a Norton fix-it

I have the same feeling as well that it's a Norton thing, but how do I make my IE behave as it did before upgrading my NIS. My homepage is still the same as it ever was...which would usually take 2 to 4 secs to open. Thanks BillyB.

 

OK. I have a question about this also due to a Family member with about the same problem. I also gave them the same answer that I gave gravedigger9

It is just the initial access that is slow ? Or is it also slow after once getting IE open ?

My gut feeling is that it is just the initial access.

a very good question

ok...takes time in openning brand new IE windows, have it be original launch from desktop or from my favorites or a hyperlink from an already open IE window to get to another site. It moves like it used to when switching between open IE windows.
This whole thing is killin me because I'm a speed junkie and now I feel like I'm dial-up in an ice storm.
Need input and resolution...Please, i'm begging ya.

 

I agree to a point.

But isn't it better to be a little slower and have what may be better protection ? One bad file could makes things a lot slower.

I believe FIRMLY that speed on a PC is about the same as in an automobile. speed can KILL And the more load you put on them the longer it may take to get it going.

If I were really concerned about speed I would be DUMPING this XP Pro machine. It takes twice as long to bootup than my 98SE machine does and it has more RAM and a faster CPU. And both are loading just about the same things ( other than the OS ) at bootup. That is why I usually turn it on on my way to my first cup of coffee in the AM and by the time I get back it is booted up ( hopefully ). If I sit here and wait for it I go nuts.

not really here for a "speed" debate

I can see you like a good convo/debate, but my main and only reason for this initial thread was to get some real answers/advice as to why my IE is now sooo slow in opening. Just like this sites moniker says..A wealth of windows knowledge...that's what i'm looking for...on with the advice, off w/ the debates. not looking to **** ya off, just short on time (have 3 little kids I'm trying to watch, clean the house because relatives are coming for New Years, and pay some bills on-line all before my wife comes home for lunch). Any other day would be great to have a nice debate, just not today...sorry.

I thought that passing along not only a possible fix but new ideas and/or reasons why we do things the way we do was being helpfull. But I guess I was wrong.

I believe that I may have a few more years experience than you do. And over those years I have learned that the same fix does not work on all machines.

I have also learned that sometimes someone may come up with an idea that I never even thought of but helps me fix things. Or at least make things more manageable.

And again, one of the biggest lessons is that speed should not always be the biggest concern. And as of this date protection against Viruses, Spyware etc. should be.

Still again. I believe you both asked and answered a question right in your original post.

dear billyb...like i said before, i wasn't trying to get you upset or have a speed debate or try to pull rank w/ all your -vast- years of experience. You may have thought that because i joined just a week ago that i'm some kinda newbie. Sorry to burst ur bubble, been hacking away since 3.1, before the age of the "rentium ". Never needed to post in a forum before for an answer and probably never will again.
You never really gave me an answer...maybe it's your Norton doesn't really cut it in my "book ". Where's the resolution ??
Un-install my only anti-virus ?? U talk soo highly of "protection ".
Try rebooting in safe-mode ?? nah !
Get out ur back-pack. Why? u ask. Ur about to go to school.
Open task manager w/ no connections (internet) going. Open tm so it's tall & skinny, so u can see all active processes that r sucking-up ur cpu. Now, open IE & see which process is eating-up the cpu. For me it was my SpySweeper, taching me at 48%.
So, now I just close SpySweeper completely and viola...back in biz.
Crazy huh ??....nothing to do w/ Norton.
You owe me one shinny apple...make it a Mac. hahahahahaha

 

I opened TM as you suggested. Unless I did something wrong or missed something the biggest single usage is Sytem Idle Process at 97% untill I do something. Things do change as I start different things but do return to a CPU usage of 00.

Now. If all was well with no problems before installing the new Norton but problems after which cause SpySweeper to go nuts then I have no other thoughts than NORTON messed something up. Or the two are just plain incomptable.

I agree with needing an AV but there are others that work just as well with FAR LESS system load.

Also. If you have the experience that you say you do you should know that we may well interpit the situation differently. And may well have different ideas. ( or fixes ).

Gotta go for now as my Wife has challanged me to a game of Cribbage. ( via the LAN )
